Some 2700HGV observations

Thanks to Xild, I am now running on a 2700.

First impressions. Interesting to set up, it allocated the first two computers static IP addresses, probably because they were on and plugged into the Netgear before I made the switch. Repairing both connections soon fixed that. For some reason it decided on PPPoE rather than PPPoA, but I soon disabused it of the idea.

Sync speed is 400k better than the Netgear, which doesn't bump me a profile step but does put me in the middle of the 2500 range, rather than hanging onto the bottom edge by my fingernails - and often falling off. Curiously, noise margin hasn't shifted from my target 9db at all. Is this normal?

Haven't gone walkabouts with the wireless yet, but I'm getting 'excellent' signal strength in its normal position.

Compared to the Netgear, it seems to take a while to boot, or to display a stats page in the browser, but that's certainly not a problem. A couple of speed tests hint at a higher throughput than the Netgear offered.

I use a Laserjet connected by ethernet as the default printer for all computers. In order that they can always find it, Windows needs to know the IP address. I have set this on the Laserjet and in the port configuration on each computer and it's working fine, but the 2700 didn't 'see' that connection on the network page for some time, now it does though. I'm guessing it was a lease issue?

Overall, it's looking very good from my pov, with a strong chance of keeping a stable 2500 profile from now on. :)

More anon...

Was it a factory reset then Rik?

My 2700 still stays at a 9db margin, I think BT set it (via a request from IDNet) to that when I was having a lot of disconnects sometime last year. The router reports a slightly higher noise margin of 60.2db rather than the 59db from my Netgear, but it has achieved an higher sync rate and profile. I am tempted to reset the router to see if it will connect faster, but part of me says leave it.

Hi Glenn

Yes, the old paper clip routine. :)

My target margin is 9db, set at my request, to gain stability. At this time of night, on the Netgear, it would be down to 3db or so. If the 2700 can maintain a solid 9, then I might be able to get my target back down to 6!

I take it you meant attenuation, a noise margin that size I would love to have? ;) Mine has gone up from 55db to 56.7db, so very similar result to you.

I shall just sit and watch for a few days...

I certainly found that when i started using tip wonderful beast of a router that my noise margin was a lot more steady. It still goes up and down, but it doesn't fluctuate as anywhere near as much as my old linksys used to.

Rik

Where do you get the live figure from, Lance. Is it just in the MDC?

Oh, and someone please out me out of my misery, what is the push button at the bottom (or right) for?

A report from the dark side... ;)

Having not twitched yesterday evening, the router finally reported a change in noise margin - from 9 to 10!!

It looks like this really is going to make a huge difference to my stability (and that of the ADSL connection :)), and keep me on a profile of 2500, rather than 2500 dropping to 2000 at regular intervals.

How a router improves noise margin is beyond me, but I'm not arguing.

The button is for full pass or guest pass (when you want to give somebody temp' access). Go to the 2wire site for more details. Good luck  ;D www.2wire.com/index.php?p+112
Mr Music Man.

Rik

Thanks for that, Den. I'll delve a little.

I'm curious that I seem to be getting faster speeds on the same profile. Not a huge amount, but noticeable. I think this box is magic. ;)

Rik,

Don't fight it or try to understand it.........

There will come a time when you will actually forget it cos it will be so reliable !!!!

I already have. I've got Routerstats watching it, but the graph is flat - very boring.

Another thing I've noticed about it is that the firewall seems more powerful than the Netgear one. Still haven't worked out the front panel button, even with Den's clue, though.

Rik,

Can you give me the settings for router stats ? I failed to get it running on this ages ago

Put:

http://home/xslt?PAGE=B02&THISPAGE=B01&NEXTPAGE=B02

in the login URL, untick the login/logout boxes. Then do the 'get page' thing. It's a bit messy in the display, with an error about Javascript as RS doesn't support that, but it does show the figures. Mark as normal, hit Test and you should be good to go.

What fooled me for a while was the NM not changing, I thought maybe that page was only correct at the time of connection, but I know it updates now...

you mean i need to buy a new router and my stats / speed will improve ?

:o

Rik

It's possible that a different router could improve things for you Steve. As I've said, I've gained 400k by installing the 2700, so if it does the same for you, it could be a very worthwhile investment.

Den's clue is correct, that is what it's meant to do. I'm not sure if it's actually enabled on the routers though.

So what, in theory, should happen if it's pressed, Lance. ATM, the answer appears to be 'nothing'. :)

10db of noise margin all day - Routerstats is looking flatter than a pancake!

:o

Steve, by changing from a DG834G to the 2700HGV my profile has gone from 1750 to 3000, I have done nothing else to improve the line, in fact the 2700 reports more attenuation on the line than before.
