TBH, I don't understand it, Steve. Achieving a high sync speed I could understand, but improving the noise margin performance? That should be a function of the line. One way of it happening, I suppose is a more intelligent negotiation for frequencies, that takes account of the lines characteristics.

Take a look at the two noise margin graphs. The Netgear one is taken from yesterday (and is typical), the 2700 one is taken from today.

Could it be better 'Noise' filtering/amplifying?  Probably something like Dolby is for sound. 

Forget it's present 'cheap' price - you are getting what originally was intended for business applications, which usually means more/better components.   

It certainly sounds like a good investment for those with poor lines.
