2wire 2700 is it worth it!

Hey guys,

Read a few bits and pieces both here and elsewhere that it is good for slightly dodgy phone lines, my line stats are as follows:

Operational Mode ADSL G.Dmt
Upstream 832 kbps
Downstream 6624 kbps
Noise Margin (Upstream) 9.0 db
Noise Margin (Downstream) 6.0 db
Attenuation (Upstream) 19.5 db
Attenuation (Downstream) 38.5 db 

Do you think that it would benefit changing to this, currently using a billion 7300G which has increased my sync speed by 1000kbps approx over the netgear i had before.

I'm only a recent convert, less than 24 hours, but my initial impressions of the box are that it gives me rock solid noise margin, where the Netgear would be wandering about all over the place, and it is synching 400k above the Netgear's rate. Although that doesn't move my profile, I have detected a small (6-7%) improvement in throughput.

If you can get you hands on one, try it.

I've had one for months now and have been harping on about them for a long time. (I have had the pleasure of Netgears, Belkins and DLinks inc some of the latest models and none compare to the 2Wire.)

I am not a huge fan of the Netgear range, for my line they caused a lot of problems esp the latest PN MIMO one that saw my noise margin eroding over an 8 hour  period and so many re-synchs.....

I have a poor line with a 59 db so getting a solid 1.75 meg out of it where I saw at best 1 meg and normally 0.5meg is a wonder.................

I have also been down the DMT tweak route and spent a fortune in time trying to squeeze the best out of those enabled routers, the 2WIRE just got plugged in and it worked straight out of the box better than them all.

All know I am a huge fan but can only base that on a very good personal experience with it.

It MIGHT not make a lot of difference to you, but as yet I have not seen one WORSE case for swapping and in most cases improvements are seen.

Like Rik said if you can try one do so or take a plunge and buy one, worse case is you will get your money back by selling it on. Another plus is that compared to the mainstream manufacturers it is relatively cheap...........

i got mine for £20 of ebay just arrived this morning so i will have a play with it tonight and see what stats i can get, i havent got anyway of checking its all working while im at work but i shall have a geek evening tonight and figure it all out.

It will work with Routerstats, Az, so if you don't mind leaving your machine on, you can get a good picture of performance that way.

In the week I've been running mine, I've had no disconnections, the noise margin has been 10db (day), 9db (night), except last night when there was a burst of noise from 5-11pm, I'm guessing at Xmas lights. That dropped the margin to 8db with occasional 7s.

do you use the "router stats lite" or the full on router stats with your 2700hgv?

I've used both, Az, I was the beta tester for Lite, but I tend to prefer the full version.

just another quick question is it worth removing the ring wire if you have a NTe5 filtered face plate running through Cat5e to your ADSL socket?

No, you should see any difference in that case - though I'd be tempted to try both ways, just to be sure.

Just tried it all here and its about 700kbps slower than my billion so no joy for me with that, gonna stick with the billion, anyone want a cut price 2wire modem/router?

You could try again in the morning, as there is less noise about and therefore you should get a higher sync.

The difference this router makes sometimes is how how it can hold on to sync, but it is obviously quite possible that the billion is better for your line. That's the problem with max, there is no one best router

yeah the number of routers i own is testimony to that,

1x DG834G
1x Speedtouch 536
1x Linksys WR54G
1x Billion 7300G
1x 2 Wire 2700HGV

been there tried them all and so far for me the billion rocks its steady and holds a higher sync speed than all the others by far, seems to maintain better line stats as well than the other modems, i seem to have at least found the right modem/router for me i might give the old ring wire trick a go see if i can squeeze abit more that way at least i will be able to see if it works or not.

As Lance says, Az, since the advent of Max, no one router is clearly the best, so if the Billion works for you go with it (your spares cupboard sounds a bit like mine! ). The ring wire shouldn't be an issue in your case, but it will do no harm to try removing it and find out for sure.
