Any advice on cutting down the spam i get to my main idnet email account? I've not signed up for anything with it yet but im getting spam already, no doubt choosing quite a simple @idnet.co.uk prefix hasnt helped though. The majority of it is delivered to ****@idmedia.co.uk (not @idnet.co.uk), so i suppose filtering mail addressed to the idmedia address would be a good place to start?

Which emailer do you use?  I use Eudora which has an inbuilt spam filter.  It's very good.  The others will know what spam filter to get for other emailers.

I love Mailwasher. It stands between you and the email and bounces messages back to the mailer. Eventually it gets you off the (apparently) more expensive 'guaranteed' email address lists.

I also bought a domain (£7 for two years) and use a separate email address for each entity I converse with over email. This means IF an email address starts to get spammed I write a snotty email to the postmaster that either sold my email address or had my email address stolen and set the address to bounce mode. This has actually only happened once (Electricshop.com).

My understanding is that it bounces messages back to the "from/reply to" address, which probably belongs to a forged innocent party.

The address is usually a non-existent email address. I've used it for two years and honestly no-one has complained (and I do prescreen).

The point is that the email itself does not download directly to your PC, bringing its fruitful harvest of filth and viruses.

That is an option, but it's not compulsory.  I've used MailWasher for years, and I don't bounce spam, I just delete it from the server.  There is actually an argument that bouncing mail merely confirms that the address is 'live', as the spammers can see through the MailWasher disguised 'bounced' message.

Mr J, are you using the IDNet spam filters on your account?  They really are very effective.  You can set them up in your customer account settings.  :)

Are you able to enable the spam filtering, as Simon suggests above, for the idmedia address?

I'm assuming this would be done through the partner login on the idnet.net homepage?

If you can't, it might be worth giving support a ring tomorrow.

Are you saying you are forwarding the mail to your IDNet address? If so, that would defeat the boundary servers, as your existing mail account server will keep re-trying. You need to, ideally, filter at source, but certainly tweak the IDNet filters for maximum effectiveness.

on a total side note, my idnet address also gets alot of spam but i cant change any options for the main account address which is getting spammed and that is not listed when i click "email setup" in the customer section, is this a case of putting a call into support?

Rik

If the address is not showing up on your accounts page it's definitely a call to support - I'm not even going to pretend that we can fix that here.  :'(
