Hi All,

Finally moved over today, and have connected consistently at..

DownStream Connection Speed 6560 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

However, downloading seems slow, and doing a speed test provides these results...

Speed Test Results
Date 12/12/07 20:32:19
Speed Down 902.98 Kbps ( 0.9 Mbps )
Speed Up 369.92 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Port 80
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

ADSL Link     Downstream     Upstream
Connection Speed    6560 kbps    448 kbps
Line Attenuation    37 db    11.5 db
Noise Margin    4 db    22 db

My downstream noise margin has changed dramatically I see, from 30db yesterday to 4db, but perhaps this is a side affect of going from 1MB fixed to ADSL2+?

The speed's as bad as I was getting on my fixed Pipex 1MB line, surely contention can't be this bad?! It's a LOT less than I expected to get to be honest, I'm rather disappointed. Is there a problem do you think?

As suggested elsewhere, I've done a test at BT, and the results show...

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 1000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  6560 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 785 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

How can I change my profile?

Malc

Hi  :karmic: and  :welc: I'm sure someone will be along soon with the know how.

Simon

Hi and  :welc:

I'm no expert on this, but until one comes along, I'll try to help.  :)

When you migrate from a fixed line speed to a Max service, it can take up to 10 days for the BT software on your line to work out the maximum stable speed your line is capable of.  During this time, you may experience dropped connections or slower than expected speeds.  Give it a couple of days, leaving your connection on, and hopefully speeds will increase, then stabilise over a few days.

There's some useful stuff in the forum FAQs which you might want to look at, and I expect someone will be along later to add to what I have said.
Simon.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

i can't really add much to Simon's excellent answer, other than to confirm the change in noise margin is indeed due to the move to max. On max, there is a default target of 6db.

Hi Apep

Welcome to the forum.  :welc:

There's always a lag on the switch to Max before your profile catches up with your new speed. If the profile hasn't changed by Friday, give support a ring, and they may be able to kick the tyres a bit for you.

Your new connection is going to be much more susceptible to noise that a fixed rate was, and you may benefit from doing a little tidying of your phone wiring. Do you have an NTE5 master socket, the type where the lower portion of the faceplate can be removed? If you do, can you try the router in the test socket behind that faceplate and note what happens to the d/s sync speed and noise margin?

Where is your router normally situated, and how many extensions do you have. What other equipment is connected, eg phones, Sky box etc?
