what idnet did with my speed

when i first joined id net, i was using a netgear DM111P modem, and the speed was around 4.7-4.9 Mb, having come form orange with a speed of 400KBS ,this was like being in heaven,

because i wanted to extend to another room, i bought a DG834G V3 router from idnet ready set up.
the speed was about the same as the modem (4.7-4.9mbs) but was gradually getting slower .until it reached 400kbs,

contacted idnet, who said leave it with us ,and we,ll get back to you, thinking i'd heard that many times on orange, you know the story, but within 5 minutes idnet phoned back to say ,"wait 2 hours then speed test again"

and i did and the speed was 5472kbs WOW

now the strange bit, i've been testing over the last week, during which ,i've done 13 tests, and each time its been faster, its now, 6978 kbs ,so where is it going to stop. 7mbs would be nice, only 22kbs to go ,

one thing idnet said was, "do not turn the router off. at any time " so i've left it on 24/7

i've since found out that each time you turn a router off, BT see this as a "drop out" and cut your speed, to give reliability, so when i turned off each night i was slowing myself down.

does this also apply to modems ???

but after all is said, this is all due to idnet, i cannot praise them enough, not just because they increased my speed , there whole attitude is very pleasant and helpful, but please do'nt tell too many people, idnet may get flooded, and spoil it,s self

Powering down a router (or modem) should not normally cause a problem, what really does the damage is just unplugging it from the wall. Even then, an isolated occasion should not be significant.

I'm guessing, from what you say, that you had a stuck profile, which IDNet have got BT to unstick. Associated with that may be an increased target noise margin, and that would require you too keep the router on, and a stable connection, for 14 days.

If you can post your line stats, we'll have a better idea of what is happening and what speeds you should be able to reach. If you can manage a BT speed test, that would be the icing on the cake. :)

RIK thx for the reply and explanation, problems are that i do not know how to find stats, or how to do a BT speedtest.

would appreciate SIMPLE "how to" explanation to both problems, and if necessary how to get them onto this site

thx again in anticipation

Glenn

merlin1 go to http://speedtester.bt.com/ and follow the on screen instruction to see what your profile is

You may need a little patience with it, Merlin.  It's often busy, but perseverance will get you there in the end.  :)

merlin

so the bt test result was this

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6307 kbps

now i,m not sure if this means i might get 7150 kbps or 81228 kbps one day

also i notice the present speed is 6307, where it has been around 6970 ish, but that maybe time of day (busy time)

would really like to make 7000 kbps one day !!!!

merlin

ok so thats the BT test ,now how do i get "line stats" ,whatever that is ????

i guess this will be things like attenuation, and noise etc

Rik

It will Merlin. Log in to the router interface at 192.168.0.1, and select the 'show stats' button, that will list the d/s sync speed (which we know to be 8128), noise margin and attenuation.

You're actually not far off the maximum speed you can obtain. From the 7150 profile, which is the highest you can go (I'm jealous :)), you need to deduct about 10% for the ATM transmission overheads, so something around 6400-6500 is about the best you can get theoretically. You may be able to improve things with a little tweaking of MTU/RWIN.

Rik i tried to get my stats on 192.etc, but it then asks for user name and password,
i have these written in a book, which i did AT THE TIME of signing on to idnet ,so i'm sure they are correct, it accepts my user name ok ,but rejects the password, so now i'm stuck.

maybe if i phone idnet in the morning ,they may be able to help

merlin

rik heres a strange one, in the previous situation my password was not accepted, yet i have just done a downloads  check, and it accepted the same password ????

Rik

The username and password for the router are not normally the same as for IDNet. Usually, the username is admin (lowercase) and the password is your IDNet password if they set the router up, otherwise the default is password.

merlin

well i finally got into the line stats , but theres so many figures etc in there, which ones do we need to know??

sorry to be a pain with this ,but i am gradually getting there

thx

Rik

We want the downstream attenuation, noise margin and sync speed, see screen shot below.

thx again RIK ,nearly getting there??

downstream attenuation  39dB

noise margin   4dB

sync speed (connection speed) 8128 kbs

is this good /bad etc and what can i do (and how !!) to improve it , i really want to get 7000kbs,
if i can,

and IF i mess up the present setting would i be able to get back to where i am now ????

Rik

Your sync speed will get you a profile of 7150, the highest there is, and that's what the BT test reports. The issue would seem to be whether you can maintain it. The noise margin on Netgears is reported unreliably, but mine would hold sync down to -2db (theoretically impossible).

However, your throughput is close to what can practically be achieved after stripping out overheads. What may be an issue is exchange congestion. IDNet guarantee no congestion within their network, but first you have to reach them through BT. It would be worth checking the status of your exchange at:

http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/

to see if there are any local issues.

merlin

there appear to be no local issues, the status is rated as green
the exchange is set for 8MB

i am point 9 km from the exchange ,with very few properties between myself and the exchange                                                                                                                        by the nature of this rural area, it is virtually a straight line, with none or few deviations, since it is just fields for many miles, either side of the line

Rik

The only thing left, then, is to tweak your MTU/RWIN settings to get the best from your circuit and equipment. There's a guide here.
