Just a query,i phoned idnet and was told i would be migrating to them on the 13th(tomorrow) i have not received any email with login settings etc, when should that come?
secondly ,can someone tell me what is meant by dns poisoning? ???

thanks in advance

Ian

Malc

I suggest giving them a ring in the morning, it took 5 working days for me

Did a quick google for your other question, take a look at this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNS_cache_poisoning
hope it helps and  :welc:

Someone with more knowledge will be along soon

Simon

Hi Cowie, are you sure that the IDNet email hasn't got lodged in a spam folder somewhere?  I got mine almost immediately when I signed up online.  If not, as Malc said, give them a call in the morning.

That always happens to me when I get a new car - the old one always runs great in the last couple of days I have it!  Mind you, haven't had a new one for 10 years now.   :'(

Hi ian.

dns poisoning is basically an entry in your router which tells it where to find a website, but giving it a false direction. Hopefully that makes sense!

cheers lance as clear as mud mate lol ;D

lol. To give an example:

The older 2700HGV routers try to 'phone home' to check the user details are correct. Obviously, should you pas this router on they will want to put their own details in.

The way the router phones home is by contacting xxxxx.xxxxxx.bt.com. To poison the dns, in order to stop it doing this, we would put an entry in the routers DNS table to say that whenever you want xxxxx.xxxxxx.bt.com then it is here: 10.0.0.1. As the IP address is that of the unit, every time it tries to phone home, it loops round and gives up.

Anther example could be the the BBC may want to stop their employees going on ITV's website, and so they would put in an entry saying that whenever itv.com is requested, to redirect it to bbc.co.uk.

Hopefully the mud is a bit clearer now!

i have a dlink dsl 2640B wireless router, which is  a pretty new model i think so i should be ok right?

Ian

Rik

DNS poisoning is only needed with some 2700 routers, due to their links to BT, you can safely forget all about it.
