We'll find out, Ted. I'm sitting here amazed to see a noise margin at 13db - it never achieved that with the Netgear. I suppose I should force a re-sync to get the extra speed, but I'm more fond of stability, so will resist. :)

I'm not fussed in the slightest about VoIP, as long as that's the only difference.  :)

Rik

Afaik, Sebby, it is. A bit like the wireless/non-wireless Netgears.

Ted

If its unlocked with the SBC firmware it won't have voip capability anyway enen if it was "v"
Ted
There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Great stuff.  :)

My only issue at the moment is that my target SNRM was increased to 15dB about 5 days ago because I did too many manual resyncs to try and reach the required sync for a 4,000k bRAS profile (when will I learn?). So, I'm not sure whether I should leave the SpeedTouch sync'd for 14 days, which'll hopefully mean the target SNRM moves down to 12dB, and then get the 2Wire hooked up. I do know someone at BT who usually resets my margin for me, but he's not replying to my messages.  :(

I must admit Rik I had the 2wire hanging on all night at 1db with no issue once, I seem to have a good balance of speed and snr now by resyncing at about 730am , its got an iron grip even at low margins  ;D
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

According to the 2Wire Site, models with a V have VOIP, those without, don't, which is all academic if the software prevents the HGV from using VOIP. ;)

Ok - time for my daft question for the day.

With my ST330 USB modem obviously it re-negotiates it's sync rate everytime it's powered up.

Normally I get around the 3/3.5 mark which gives my a 2500 profile (BTSpeedtester). According to DRSpeedtouch I have 32db attenuation and a 15db noise margin.

Now the dumb question bit - how often does/will a modem/router re-negotiate it's sync rate and am I likely to see an improvement in my pofile over time??

Still waiting for my 2700hg - was dispatched on Tuesday.

The issue with using a USB modem with a DSL Max product is that it'll resync with the exchange every time you restart your computer, which could be several times a day. With a fixed rate product, this isn't an issue, but with Max the exchange sees many resyncs as a sign of instability, thus increasing the target SNRM (in your case to 15dB - the highest), which causes you to sync lower to achieve that SNRM. The default (and lowest) SNRM is 6dB, and it gets pushed up in 3dB increments if the exchange detects instability up to 15dB. Your line is probably capable of close to full sync were your target noise margin 6dB.

On the assumption that your line is stable and your target SNRM has been pushed up simply because of the resyncs owing to the USB modem, a router would hopefully sort the situation out. The theory is that if you stay sync'd for 14 days at a time, the target SNRM drops by 3dB. A router would allow you to do this more easily than leaving a PC on for 2 weeks!

Thanks Sebby,

much as i thought from reading this and other forums that the 15db margin was high and was due to the way the on/off way a usm modem works. Intend leaving modem on 24/7 once set up.

My instinct would be to take the hit, Sebby. Get the 2 Wire in place, let it work its magic, and then let the noise margin target catch up.

Routers don't re-negotiate upwards, only downwards if the noise gets too bad to hold the connection. That said, I've seen a router drop the line due to noise and then re-connect at a higher speed. Once you have the 2700, the best bet is to just keep it connected for 14+ days, see how your noise margin is, then force it to re-sync, hopefully the target margin will have dropped by 3db and your sync speed will increase. Repeat that a couple more times and your line should be going full tilt.

You know me Rik, I have that Manana affliction.. Don't do today what can safely wait until another day. ;D

Seriously I have just done a BT Speed Test on my Zyxel, for comparison test, will have a play with the 2Wire a bit later.

It's just I feel like I'll be wasting 5 days of sync (current uptime).

Incidentally, the 2Wire came, while I was in the shower.  ::)

Never mind, I'll pop to the sorting office in an hour. :)

Rik

I understand what you mean, otoh, mine is currently showing a 12db margin, having synched at the target 9db. I'd be inclined to forgo the five days and get the best performance you can, so the BT software can see how the line is behaving.

I know what you're saying, Rik. I just can't help but think I'll resync at 15dB again, then have to wait another 14 days, as opposed to 9 at the moment.

Saying that, I probably won't be able to resist setting it up.  >:D

I hope you have plenty of room, the bloody thing is huge, and it doesn't have an on/off switch, never had one that didn't have an on / off switch before. :'( :'(

Did yours come with a stand, In? If mine doesn't I don't know what I'll do with it!

I set mine up long before I connected it to the line, well, five minutes anyway. :)

It is a bit larger than most 'domestic' routers, isn't it! :)

I've got mine in the 'side' position, using the supplied stand. It runs much cooler that way.

I'll certainly set mine up, and probably go on to connect it to the phone line.

10 minutes and I'll pop to the Post Office.

I'll tell you what, having no work is just great.  :)
