any joy in getting a third one from Dave yet ? Suggest you 'ask' for a 2Wire badged one as it looks like it's the AT&T stock that's causing the problems.

A drop in the target noise margin will definitely help you, pushing your sync speed to ~4500 at 6db. How long have you had a stable line now?

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the AT&T branding meant that there were some incompatibilities, or it could just be a coincidence.

Depends what you call stable.....

This is my first 24/7 modem as previous on a USB ST330 - therefore re-sync's everytime the PC was powered up. This would have pushed up the noise margin wouldn't it ?????? Plus all the playing around with the slow AT&T one didn't help !

I'm used to seeing sync rates of 3Mbps in the evenings with the occassional 3.8Mbps on weekday mornings. This means I'm usually on a 2.5Mbps profile.

If as you say I can get a 'stable' 4.5Mbps sync or better a 4Mbps profile will be welcome.

The normal connection/disconnection of a modem shouldn't be flagged as instability, Mike. Normally, BT's system only flags a line as unstable if there are a high number of errors, or big shifts in sync speed or, most likely, more than 10 disconnections in an hour.

Sync speed is usually higher in the morning than the evening due to there being less noise about. The only question, then, is how your target noise margin came to be at 15db. In your case, I would suggest a word with IDNet, and ask them to try to get it reset to 6db. Your line can then find its natural level. In theory, if you wait 14 days without losing sync, it will drop by 3db, repeating until it reaches 6db or the line becomes unstable, but I think you'd do better with some intervention.

If my predictions are correct, you'll end up with a 3500 or 4000 profile. For your attenuation, depending on the characteristics of the line, you may even go faster.

Definitely email IDNet. I (patiently) waited for 14 days, and nothing changed, despite being sync'd for all of this time. One email to IDNet at the weekend and my noise margin has been reset today. :)

I think the issues most ISPs face is that BT just don't listen, but I got the impression that Miriam has a contact at BT, making the whole process very easy indeed.  :D

I thought I'd give my new 2700HG a try now that my target SNRM is sorted.

When I went to set it up, I noticed it hadn't been reset to defaults - it still had the original user's data in. Not the end of the world, but not very professional of DD. I reset it to defaults then set it up in the same way as my first 2700HG. Unfortunately, it sync'd about 600k+ lower, so it looks like it's one of these slightly dodgy ones.

I've gone back to my original now, which is giving me 5,152k @ 6dB (and that's at night time - which I want so that my SNRM doesn't go below 6dB at any time, hopefully). Other than the intermittent LED, it's absolutely fantastic and I'm going to stick with it. I won't be trying to get another replacement as I think I've definitely got my £9 worth.  ;D

I think it is more of a case that they know Miriam will come after them if they don't listen!!!! :)

I have sent him a an email, giving the info, shall see what he has to say this time.

I did ask for a 2Wire, he was in breach of contract in sending the AT&T anyway, I paid for a 2Wire, I note that the AT&T's he is selling now are not mentioned as 2Wire..

But they are still all 2wire units - just a different badge and settings in the firmware!

Not ever so sure that they are identical Lance, Wingnutz has had the same problem as me with his AT&T one.

In any case I paid for a 2Wire, so that is what I should get, you could argue that a Toyota Aygo and a Citroen C1 are the same, other than the badge, which they are of course, I still wouldn't have a Citroen. ;)

Both boxes I had were identical save for the AT&T being Made In China and the 2Wire one Made in Malaysia and of course having different badges on them.

From what I could tell both were operating on the SBC firmware aswell.

Still no idea why one sync'd slow and the other is fine.

Same here Mike, other than the original 2Wire didn't work at all, the AT&T worked, but with the diabolical speed problem.

Both have the same firmware, both came with the former users info still on them.

I wonder whether the login info would still work? If someone had BT broadband, it might pay them to buy a refurb 2700...

Both of mine appeared to be from the USA Rik, user ID's seemed to be from there.

OK...Update, had an email from Caroline at Digidave's, she has offered to send a " tested unit " this time, however she cannot guarantee that it will not be another AT&T one, which has miffed me a bit, it looks like " Hobsons Choice " so I have grudgingly agreed.

Anybody in the market for some nice shiny silver door-stops.. ;D
