oopps , thanks for pointing out about jersey not covered by the regs, didn't know that.
i paid by paypal, where i am a "verified member", and they cover you up to £500 , sometime ago i had a dispute with someone on ebay,(they had not sent the goods) and within 4days paypal refunded me. and the seller was removed from ebay ???

to any members of the forum, i would suggest if you use paypal, get "verified" , its free, takes about a week, and is very easy to do, and when you need them ,they are very good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh one other thought that crossed my mind on the matter, DD is based in Jersey, I am fairly certain that the Distance Selling Regs. don't apply as Jersey has it's own laws, it isn't even in the EU.

I believe you're right, In.

If you bought in the UK in GBP online it still applies I believe In, worth checking on that.

I did do a check on Play.Com ( Jersey based ) a while back Gary, that is what makes me think that Jersey isn't covered by our legislation, 95% sure, but not 100%. ;)

Gary

Last time i looked if you pay in GBP in your own country you still have recourse on the distance sellers act despite what the countries selling regs are In :-\ simple call to trading standards will tell you for sure

Rik

Trading Standards have published this guide to DSR.

The way I read this paragraph:

"Note to traders

UK traders who sell goods not only to UK consumers but to consumers in other EU countries should take note that the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000, and subsequent amendment Regulations, apply only to UK consumers. The Regulations derive from EU Directives, which have been implemented in different ways by EU Member States, and foreign buyers are allowed to rely on the laws of their own country. For example, the rules on cooling off periods, exemptions to the Regulations and performance of the contract may vary significantly from one Member State to another. Traders who sell to consumers outside the UK should seek the advice of a specialist."

suggests to me that it applies to UK firms selling to UK consumers, so it wouldn't apply to a CI or Manx based business.

I had issue with a pc from Canada Rik, this was three years ago and I was told that if you paid in your own currency online then the rules of the country you buy from applies, this may well have changed and probably has

According to that it excludes " Auctions " .. so stuffed anyway. ;)

That doesn't sound right to me, Gary, as nearly every invoice I have received has small print on the back which also states that, say, English law applies. What we need is a lawyer. :)

Its a shame when this happens I suppose a UK based seller can set up a business then outside the uk operate from within the UK and get away with blue murder these days if the rules have changed and from what I read it seems so :-\

I suspect that is part of the reason there are so many online suppliers based in the Channel Islands Gary, that and the VAT workaround.

It is time these " Tax Havens " were sorted.

I meant if you buy in the UK with GBP the UK rules apply, well they do in the data protection act, say a USA company breaches your rights in the USA the UK rules apply but sometimes they don't get things right on the phone so you may well be right Rik, and if I was a Lawyer I would not be sitting here  ;)

OK, a bit of news;

Whilst using my second computer, via wireless link I spotted a second available, but WPA locked connection, showing up as " BT Broadband Hub *** "..strange I thinks to myself.

I pop around next door yesterday and ask the obvious question and yes sure enough, he has managed to " acquire " a BT Business Hub from work.

Anyway following some discussion, he offers to loan it me, it is the newer type double ssid type.

So I am now all excited, I set it up on my line, bingo it connects immediately, now comes the bad news, the speed is no different to my Zyxel, very slightly worse according to BT Speed Tester.

Speed using Zyxel on 10/1/08;

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
    Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6573 kbps

Speed using BT Business Hub ( 2 Wire 2700 ) earlier today;

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.    IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)    Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6506 kbps

Oh well, it was worth a try, my 3rd one from DD has not arrived yet.

It would appear then that the 2700 has no significant improving effect on a good line.

A question; The new type ( now returned to my neighbour ) has a button on the front, what does it do?

I could have saved all of the DD hassle, had I have known this before, oh well. ;)

Hi In

The difference in speeds is no more than I would expect test on test. I think you just proved my 'piece of wet string' theory about your line. ;)

The button is used to give guests access to the wireless side of the router. I never did work out how, or if it even worked at all.

I had a feeling that it wouldn't make any/much difference either Rik, I just wanted to prove to myself that it wouldn't.

Thanks for the info re; the button.

His had the little stand with it, so I can always borrow that to make a template for the DD one, if it ever arrives. ;D

Or you could just forget to return it. ;) At least he knows where to come if he has any problems...

If it's anything like the SpeedTouch routers, there is a configuration setting so that new users cannot join the wireless network unless "invited", which you do by pressing the button on the front, giving something like a 1 minute window in which the user can find and authenticate themselves on the network.

re-digi dave, after some toing and froing, caroline admitted the 2700 was dud.
a full refund was then immediatly sent,

so despite the questions on the reliability of some of dd,s stock of 2700,s , his intentions seem to be good, i will therefore, give him a positive rating with ebay

Rik

Thanks for that update. When is Caroline going to join the forum? :)

My 3rd one has just arrived from DD, at least this one appears to have been tested, there is a cut hole in the rear of the plastic bag and this one is a 2Wire, not an ATT&T.

Of course I now know that it ain't going to make a scrap of difference on my line.

I will test this one to be certain that it works, and then keep it as yet another spare. :(

Let us know how it goes, In. You could always sell the others on eBay as door stops...  >:D

Even if it does work Rik, this has been kicking around since the 17th December, so it's a good job I didn't actually need it.

I have seen more reports of faulty 2700 units from DD on other forums, so our experience on here is far from unique.

I think his website is enough to make me wary. That graphic!  :eek4:

RIK. perhaps we should consider caroline to be an "honary member" after all she has been mentioned several times on this forum, and she seems to be DD's main agent for 2700's.
based on past experience we may need her here !!!!  ::) ::)
