Having ditched Ad-Aware and SpyBot, I've now installed free SUPERAntiSpyware having read good reports elsewhere and here. It takes an long time to do a complete scan of everything, I hope that that just means that it's doing a thorough job. It only found a tracking cookie though.

It does take a while, Noreen, but I usually let scans run while I'm doing something else away from the computer, as often the scan takes up a lot of resources, and if you're battling against it to do other stuff, it makes the scan slower.

Same here Simon, I usually turn off my monitor and let it do it's thing.

I won't take such an interest the next time. Just using it for the first time I was interested in what it was doing. Anybody got any advice re any special settings?

The full scan should cover everything, Noreen.    Just make sure the box is ticked in Preferences to automatically check for updates, and as it's the free version, without real-time protection, I would untick all of the Startup options, as you don't really want it starting with Windows, as it won't actually be doing anything unless you launch a scan yourself.
