Possible Throughput Issues?

Been with IDNet for a couple of weeks now, Is it fairly normal to have a throughput of 1-3mb during the day on a 7150 kbps profile? After midnight the speed gradually increases until at about 6am I get results like this. Starts to slow down quite quickly after 6am though. :-\

Stats from the router (Belkin F5D7632-4)

Restarted the router yesterday so the data is only from then, it was just more of the same though. Doesn't mean much to me. ::)

Bt Speedtest from earlier, down to about 1500 kbps right now if speedtest.net is to be believed.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2606 kbps

Not really that bothered, I'd just like to improve it if possible.

Rik

It's slightly odd that interleaving is on, given your stats, but that's only slowing you slightly. However, your throughput is nowhere near what it should be for your profile.

That suggests one of two possibilities, a congested (or red) exchange, check here, or your MTU & RWIN values are badly out. Have a look at the optimisation sticky, here and see if tweaking helps at all. For that speed, my instinct would be with an exchange problem though.

One other thing to try, if possible, is another modem or router. I've seen a similar situation and it was the router that was causing it.

It could also be down to a high error count. Could you post the error data from your router as a starting point?

Isn't that in the router stats picture or are you after something else? I'll see about borrowing a router if all else fails.

Exchange is showing as Green, had a go at the tweaking before, I'll give it another try and see if it helps.

Thanks for the speedy replies. :)

Sorry, I was looking at the thread on my phone and the picture didn't show up.  ::)

The errors are fine. Other than trying a new router if you can, which I highly suggest trying, I think this is one for IDNet.

Been tweaking all evening, doesn't seem to be making much differance, fed up restarting my pc now.

Except for trying out another router, anything else I can do?

Sebby

I would say that other than trying another router, there's little you can do.

Do you have an NTE5 master socket? If so, could you connect the router directly to the test socket (the socket behind the removable plate shown in the picture) and see if you get the same results?

I'm sure it won't make any difference, but IDNet will love it if you'd tried that.

Otherwise, I'd get IDNet involved, who'll probably escalate it to BT. There is certainly some issue there and BT won't deny it (like they like to do) in this case.

I believe so, i'll try that out tomorrow.

Any suggestions on a new router? I'd go with anything that isn't Belkin. Should have bought a new one ages ago, I hate Belkin.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of Belkin routers.

There are 2 routers, IMHO, that I have good experience with, and that are always praised. They are:

SpeedTouch 585v6
2Wire 2700HG

I actually have a SpeedTouch 585v6 that I used before getting a 2Wire. Send me a PM if you might be interested as I'm willing to let it go quite cheaply. After all, I don't need 2 routers.

Be aware, though, that it might not be the router to blame. Of course, if it is and BT are sent out, you'll get charged a hefty fee. :(

Wait.. so what is line rental for again? >:D ;D

Good question. So good, in fact, that I don't know the answer.  ;D

Rik

Since equivalence, Openreach charge BT Wholesale the fee, who pass it on to the ISP, who pass it on to the customer. The line rental only covers maintaining the voice line (albeit it's the same physical thing). IDNet will only call for an engineer when they're satisfied there is a fault on BT's side of the master socket - unless the customer insists otherwise.

BT Openreach, of course. :P The costs may get passed around but ultimately it remains within the BT group. I could understand something around £5 line rental, but paying £11 (or £10.50) for something that rarely should require any maintenance doesn't seem right. That doesn't include the fact that they provide only basic service should the line require any fixes or changes.

May aswell have a look at buying a 2700hg, is This the right thing? I can unlock it myself right?

Gary

That be one of them, I went from a Netgear DG834G and they make a great difference on longer lines and are very stable as well my router has been up 15 days and at this time in the morning my stats are

     Line 1 (inner pair)
Protocol:    G.DMT Annex A
Downstream Rate:    6496 kbps
Upstream Rate:    448 kbps
Channel:    Interleaved
Current Noise Margin:    6.0 dB (Downstream) 23.0 dB (Upstream)
Current Attenuation:    47.1 dB (Downstream) 29.0 dB (Upstream)
Current Output Power:    19.5 dBm (Downstream) 11.9 dBm (Upstream)

last time I did a BT speed test my throughput was about 5186 not sure on the last two digits to be precise. But as said it may not be the router itself, maybe ask someone if you can borrow a router, or contact IDNet and explain your situation before purchasing any new equipment, I think they have been known to lend routers on occasion and then you would know for sure :)
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Wobbly

is your router connected to the socket by an extension?

Indeed you can, but many are sold as pre-unlocked now :)

I have one (well, the 2700hgv actually) and it's the best router I've ever used!

I will go with Lance here they are fantastic routers  :)

Got my eye on a few on fleabay, hopefully win one this weekend. Only "Unlocked" ones on ebay are 30-40 quid (+£9 postage), I think i'll pass on the dodgy dave ones too. Don't need/want the stand/box, as long as it works so i'll just go for a used/cheap one. :P

Arthix

Whatever it was that was ruining my connection seems to have sorted itself ???.

Pretty fantastic speed for this time of day, I am happy, thanks IDNet ;D.

Clicked London by mistake and got this, I'm guessing speedtests aren't 100% accurate then.... :o

Lance

Correct, they are not. I find one of the most consistent is the BT speedtest. Rik always recommends a linux distro and a stopwatch...
