I'll probably end up hacking it in any way possible anyway. :P

I don't mind it updating so long as it doesn't start overwriting settings! Do you think it'd be possible to stop it by setting the DNS to 0.0.0.0 then manually configuring the computers? Or maybe it uses IP address.  :-\

I'm pretty impatient and I find my Netgear takes too long to boot (about 20-30seconds ;D) so I'll have to hold back on the kicking. ;)

Thanks for the advice and the eBay link, Ted. You've been a great help.  :karmic:
I used the Opera hack to allow Idnet as an allowed domain, worked a treat but has been overwritten by the the new firmware (not a problem) easy to put back if needed.
Tried setting mine to 127.0.0.1 (localhost) as well. Also doesn't seem to make any difference ;D
Plug in and go read a couple of chapters of war and peace  :legpull: not quite that bad.
Ted
There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Thanks! I've got it working now. :) Small increase in sync, but again the wiring isn't 100% yet, so I'll wait and see. ;D

Great  :)

The router does hold the SNR better.. mine stays at 7 all day and in the evening it drops to 6..

Netgear would be at 0 by now and causing re-syncs

Ted

Go to 192.168.1.254/tech , Firewall , Advanced settings.
Check the Stealth Mode and block ping boxes, also uncheck the Inbound remote management box and save.

Thanks! I had the first two but missed the remote management setting. :) I'm hoping once my cabling is complete I'll start to see higher syncs, though thus far it has held the SNR much better than the Netgear.

just out of interest, i've been around the whole house with a detuned, on medium wave radio, there are three items that are really noisy.

1) anywhere within 2 metres of the sky diggy box, is by far the worst, is this normal, could someone please try it ??? or have i got a dodgy box ???

2) anywhere within half a metre of a low energy lamp, (the house is full of them)

3) the brand new (not from dd) 2700 hgv which i replaced his dodo one with, anywhere within half a metre , this one was a suprise, is this normal ???

Rik

Some Sky boxes are very noisy and, if connected to the phone line, can take ADSL down. In the worst cases, they can put so much noise on the line that they take out neighbours' connections as well. If you don't need it connected, don't connect it. ;)

All fluorescent lights are capable of noise, some brands are noisier than others, but unless you have one near the phone line, you should be OK.

Routers sometimes do radiate, given the frequencies they are working at. By then, however, hopefully they don't impact on the ADSL signal.

RIK thanks for the reply, phone line to sky box now disconnected, may have to reconnect every so often (months )to get sky updates, but thats fine .

Rik

The updates come from the satellite. You only need the phone line connected for contractual reasons (and Sky only police multi-room subs), to order PPV stuff, or to use an interactive service. I haven't had mine connected since I moved to ADSL. :)

Updates come via satellite, not phone line, no need to have phone line connected if you are out of their one year contract.

Don't worry, Sky may tell you to connect it again, but it is highly unlikely.

Sky are only really bothered about the phone line in two situations:

1)  When setting up a Sky+ box (it's hard to get it done unless the box has made a callback)

2)  If you have multi-room

In the case of (1), after the call, you can safely disconnect. In the case of (2) they will police the connection, so all boxes have to remain connected.

And what if you dont have a phone line  ??? I've got multiroom and i dont want there s***** wiring around the house.. What would happen if i disconnected it and left it disconnected? After all, i bought the box and pay for the extras so its upto me really if i dont want to leave it connected..

Rik

Unfortunately, it's not Paul. If you want the low-cost sub on the additional boxes, then you have to keep them all connected to the same phone line. If you don't, Sky will send one or two warning letters, after which they will simply charge a full-priced sub for every box.

Agreed Rik, much as I dislike Sky / Murdoch to the extreme, he can actually do that, it was in the T&C's that everyone that signs up, agrees to unfortunately.

I found the answer to the sky phone line connection thing.

use a one for all dect phone line extender.

then the sky box is NOT physically plugged into the phone line so cannot affect the adsl line.

and no the one for all does not seem to cause a problem.

My one for all is only 1 metre away from each other but it provides line isolation.

Dean

p.s the old ones don't work with sky+

Well she has sold 2 today, we know who to now..  ;D

And now a third  ;D

But I've looked at all the poisoning stuff and it's all as clear as mud.  I'm going to look for something a bit simpler now.

Edit:  Paul's post up there looks useful.  I shall save copy and paste it and save it for the big day!  Thanks to Paul.

Well there is plenty of experienced help on here Ann, should you need it.

Well done, and good luck with your new 2700.

Good luck, Ann. My 2700 has increased my profile by 1000k, so I hope you benefit as much.

;D  Right well I'm all done.  Beautiful piece of hardware.  I had it sent to work and opened it with the others watching me dribble over it.  Of course they didn't understand but I do love nice new shiny things.  I wasn't prepared for just how big it is!  Still, with Paul's idiot guide getting it up and running was a doddle so that's definitely  :karmic: Synch is only a bit up at 6304 but I'm hoping that stability will help.  Attenuation has gone from 39 to 37 and noise margin is at 15.. eek.  Considering I was getting 8096 just a few weeks ago, it's a mystery why I can't now.  Still, the midnight blip had come back with the netgear so if I have got rid of that it'll be worth it.

I do wonder if this ebay seller realises just what she's selling here as I'm sure she's undercharging.  Still I'm not the one to tell her  ;)  Thanks guys, a lovely bit of kit!

You've answered your own question, Ann. ;)

For whatever reason, your otherwise perfect line must have suffered some noise attacks, which looks to have caused your target SNRM to shoot up to 15dB. Try and stay sync'd for 14 or 15 days, which should allow your target SNRM to drop by 3dB. Repeat this twice more and you should be back at your default level of 6dB, giving you full sync again.

I'm glad you're happy with the 2Wire, and I hope it all goes well. :)
