Roughly how is speed established?

Hi

What I mean is, as a new IDNet customer (which I am, hurrah!) what does the speed look like over the course of the 'training' period? Does it leap up all at once, right at the end? Does it creep up 1b/s at a time?

The reason I ask is, my ADSL link shows a solid 8128/448 , with D/S line attenuation of 32db, U/S 10db, D/S noise margin 32bd, U/S 23db (I have no idea whether these latter figures are good or bad). I've been with IDNet for 6 days, and my speed is still <2Mb/s which is pretty much where it started.

Should I not worry about it till day 9.9? Is this as good as it's going to get?

Welcome to the forum and welcome to IDNet.

Sounds like your data rate is still low.  What does the BT speed test say http://speedtester.bt.com/

You need to wait the full ten days and then if it's still stuck call the IDNet guys to give it a kick.  You ought to be getting good speeds with that synch rate.

Did you migrate like for like, i.e. Max to Max, or are you upgrading from your previous ISP?

Until someone who knows more about this stuff comes along, you might want to refer to the FAQs, which might give you some hints as to what could be causing any speed issues.  :)

Hi john, welcome to the forum.

The good news is that you are sync-ed at the highest possible speed on a BT line.

The bad news is that I suspect your profile has got stuck at 2mb rather than the 7.15mb line. This sometimes happens when a line is either new, or migrated from a fixed rate package.

As Ann has said, check to see what your profile is by doing a BT speedtest, and keep a note of the results. Do this daily until you get to day 10. Once there, email all the results to IDNet and they will be able to get BT to shift the profile to the correct level. BT won't do anything within the 10 day training period.

Just so you understand how the speed is established, you have a sync rate (yours is 8128) from which a profile is established. You can get more information in the FAQs linked to by Simon above.

Like others have said, it's likely that you've migrated from a fixed rate product to a rate adaptive product, and so your profile will take a while to update. Try the BT speedtester and that should give you your current profile. You'll know when it's updated because you should get closer to 7Mb throughput.  ;)

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond, and thanks for the warm welcomes. First, I'm mortified that I missed the bit in the FAQ that basically answered my question. I did read it, but obviously not closely enough.

Other random observations; I was formerly with Pipex (*spits*) on a 1Mb/s service. I have tried the BT Speedtester a few times. It has either worked and then refused my login (which is odd) or been busy. Other times when it might be less busy, I've been at work - like now.

I'll keep trying the BT thing and count the days till day 10!

Welcome to the forum and IDNet. :)

Stuck 2Mbps profiles after activation/migration are, unfortunately, not uncommon. Personally, I'd be inclined to have a word with IDNet once you've got a result from the BT tester, ie you've confirmed the profile rate. Although BT don't generally want to know during the 10-day period, this is one area I have known them deal with.

Sadly, no joy from IDNet support. I got the "leave it 10 days" answer. They also say "it *can't* be stuck", which is interesting in light of some of this thread.

I got some information from a... source, which included the following: 'B-RAS Access Profile Speed adsl2000', as well as stacks of other circuit info, which my source tells me explains why it won't go over 2Mb/s - and that it won't change without some external intervention, which he said would have to come from my ISP.

I guess time will tell who's right.

In the meantime, what logon id is the BT speedtester looking for? My IDNet login is <phone number>@idnet.gw5, but BT declined that. Are they looking for just the bit before the '@'?

The normal login is your full user login (as you in your router, so that would be both sides of the @). It's normally a name, not a phone number, though - but maybe you can choose either.

It's not very secure though is it?  I mean anyone could find out your phone number.  Of course they've still got to find out your password but one down and one to go.

I would think it's even easier to find out your name, Ann!  ;)

Mine is a user name, not number, and I joined in August.  I'm wondering if maybe there was an error in the signing up process for some people to have a phone number as a log in.  A form filler glitch, perhaps?

I would imagine it's automatically created from the signup form, which is why I wondered if something had been put in the wrong box, but of course, it wouldn't be unheard of for me to be totally wrong!  ;D

Mine is a number. I have to say I much prefer this method of assigning a username. I hate choosing a username for things. I guess for IDNet, being a small company, you'd get pretty much whatever you want, but with larger companies you have to start adding numbers and things and it gets a bit messy.  :D

Maybe there has been a change of late, In? I don't like the idea of using the phone number - it's too obvious for my taste. OTOH, the security of the login is somewhat academic as the information is only of use to other IDNet customers (at least in my case, as I use a different password for the website).

Mine is a chosen user name before the @idnet.gw5 and that was in July I think. It certainly was my choice and not automatic.
