Migrating to IDNet.

OK, my first post, and this feels a bit like an AA meeting, but here goes:

Hi.  My name is Bruce, and I'm a Tiscali user.

There, thats better.  I feel cleansed already! 

My situation - having had my fill of appalling connection speeds, and support from another continent consisting of copy/paste from apparently random, or a best arbitrary, sections of prepared script, I'm going to leave Tiscali, and you folks are currently front runners as the new provider.  I've done lots of research, and being a big fan of the adage "You get what you pay for", your service seems ideal for me.  As I understand it, the speeds are hugely better than my peak-time 0.7Mb throughput on my MAX connection, and when folks phone for support, they speak to real people who know what they're talking about.  I'm currently 6 days into the 10-day training period for MAX, but being less than 1km from the exchange and getting 24.0db attenuation and normally 6.6 db to 6.9 db noise margin on d/l, the router has synced at 8128 kbps for the whole period so far, so I anticipate being able to get a hefty speed, provided my ISP can produce the goods.  My current ISP clearly can't.

I have 2 questions, however, which I hope you can help me with.

1. Does my previous ISP have anything to do with the migration process, once they have provided me with the MAC code?  (I have never migrated before).  So far, my experience is that Tiscali can't touch anything without mucking it up.  If they have anything to do with the migration procedure, I'd be truly fearful it would all go wrong. 

2. Monthly usage.  I've been away a lot recently with my job, and if that continues, my usage demands could vary widely from month to month.  30GB one month could be fine, but the next month, if I'm away a lot, 5GB would do the trick.  With the monthly contract you advertise, is it easy and painless to switch between the two?

No, once you've got your MAC - that should be it. However, you're then in BT's hands and I'm not sure if that's worse than if it were tiscali??? Generally you'll be fine tho and certainly IDNet will be quick to whip BT if things aren't done correctly.

It is easy to swap between packages as IDNet operate monthly contracts. You'd be fine from the 30gb package to the 1gb or 5gb.

I'm not sure if you'd be able to downgrade from the supermax package as it would involve IDNet paying a regrade fee to BT.

What Ducky said. :) Movements between Max packages is easy and free, but movements between premium and Max, ie Home Super Max and any other package, does incur a fee.

Well folks, what can I say?  Posted in the middle of the night (a bout of insomnia which a bottle of red wine couldn't solve) and when I turn on this morning - all these responses!  All I've ever had at Tiscali is, after 3 posts by me, "we have raised ticket number 123456 and will reply by this forum", and I never hear anything again.  Truly impressed.  :D

I can't envisage ever wanting the Supermax package, and Max should fulfill my needs perfectly.  The ability to switch down to one of the lower packages if I'm away for an extended period is excellent.

Thanks for the swift responses.  If I had any doubts about heading your way, they're now gone.  Once I get the MAC code I'm on the way.

You won't regret it - we're all just happy customers here, even the staff. If you look at the way that yesterday's upgrade was handled, you'll get a feel for the very personal relationship we have with IDNet. I've been a customer now for 15 months, and I've not needed to contact support for myself - many others will tell you the same. It just works. :)

Captain K if ever you feel that urge to use Tiscali again then contact anyone on the forum, they can be a great comfort and help you overcome that desire. :beer1:  Oh and welcome to a very friendly bunch of....something or other. :conf:

I'd agree with everything everyone's said. IDNet are the greatest ISP there is, IMHO, and you won't believe the difference compared with Tiscali.

(Sorry, I know I shouldn't use swear words, but I couldn't help it!)

Good to hear that.  As well as the poor speeds with my current ISP, I'm also fed up with the latency.  I own an Xbox360 and I like online games.  My one fear is I'm actually going to be revealed as being rubbish!  Up to now I've blamed the latency for not being able to hit a target the size of an elephant at 10 paces  :-[

This can't happen fast enough! :'(

Ten past eight on a Sunday evening.  Modem is happily synced at 8128 kbps (24db attenuation and 6db noise margin) but throughput is just under 0.7Mbps! ???

I've had a cr*p day - But the good news is, after 3 days of trying, Tiscali have finally agreed to send my MAC code, but not before a total of 1.75 hours holding on the phone waiting to be put through to their cancellations people over the last 3 days. :mad:

And guess what - the guy I spoke to referred to a script!  When asked why I was leaving, I mentioned the speed, to be told that the speed is nothing to do with Tiscali, "its because the whole internet slows down at that time of day:yeahright:

Nevermind - I'm on the way now :thup:

:sry: got excited there, every time I come in here there's alway someone complaining about those 2.

No other products could be advertised as 8 m unlimited and supply what they do and get away with it.

Amazing!  Extremely effecient.  MAC code was in the email this morning! :o

I was expecting the 5 working days thing, and most likely having to remind them.  Impressed.  Almost tempted to stay with Tiscali.

The best service I ever got from Tiscali was sending me a mac - within ten minutes of my phone call requesting it!! Pity that their other teams aren't anywhere near as efficient, or they wouldn't be losing customers all the time. ;)

On the other hand, I would never have found IDNet :( Best ISP move I ever made :)
