That looks like your wiring is the problem, it's as clear cut as I've ever seen, even the speed fits the reduction I predicted for the 9db margin.

Have a look at the wiring guide:

http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=1904.msg31528#msg31528

Rik i don't know about you but wiring and correct filters keep cropping up.

your write up is excellent to say the least, and i would like your permission to expand it and write a web page up with full photo's of different scenarios. and ultimately how to solve them.

for this i need all idnetters that have had problems to email me direct different photo's of junction boxes internal and external.

photo's of various filters (i have a bt 50 soap on a rope).

this will be a very simple web page designed for the complete novice, proof reading will also be reqd from some others any help appreciated.

so input reqd from all.

and Rik do i have your permission to use your write up & modify/expand it in places?

Of course i will have a bit at the bottom leaving all who helped credit.

My email is publically visible to the right else email  dean at packetradio.co.uk  replace the spaceatspace with @

Sounds like a great idea, Dean.  :)  Rik may be in late this evening, or if not, tomorrow morning.

I think it's a good idea. Whether it will actually be read before questions are posted - or whether it would be understood (sometimes a tailored response is needed) - is one thing, but it's a good idea nonetheless. :)

g7pkf, do you happen to need a web host / domain for this new site? I'd be more than happy to help out with that and possibly some content as well.

You surely do, Dean. Let me know if I can help at all.

Lord... you're not a 'HostGator' customer are you? 'Overselling' to such a degree like 300gb of disc space is highly dangerous. Its not economically possible to offer huge amounts of disc space like that for small prices. The only way it works is if they have 100 users, 300gb of disc space and oversell, oversell, oversell! Or if you're hosting it locally dodgy dodgy!

Have fun when you reach a lot of space and your host does like it, or your host has some load problems ;-).

Would still love to help on the content front! :-).

g7pkf

No im not.

I always run webstuff locally to start with as its easier to modify then put it on a ickle server i have located in docklands.

The server i use locally is a ML370 G3 2Gb ram raid 5 with hotspare redundant psu's (each fed from its own ups-one a 1400 one a 1000 APC) I won't go into the spec of the ickle server.

thanks for the offer of help.

the plan is as follows:-

main objective will be if you can wire a plug you can fix your adsl connection to the best speed and stability possible.

get as many photo's as possible.

the write up will start with getting stats from router and why people think they have a problem, including links to samknows for exchange check and estimated line capabilities.

bt speedtest speedtest.net and adslguide speedtest.

then start with what to do if you have an NTE5.

and a section on how to re-wire from the nte5 to other extensions properly using cat5 cable.

then what to do if you don't-including a page on "how to convert to an nte5" with a big disclaimer BT take a pretty dim view of anyone mucking about with there equipment. and  a do not do this pay BT a small fortune to come in and do it for you.

then a small photo section of different type's of BT junction and connection boxes.

I am going to try and avoid "slagging off" any ISP's but will recommend a certain one as one of the best IMHO.

anyone like to comment on my initial thoughts for the content layout

That sounds fun for a local server :-D.

Brilliant - are you going to assign rules to volunteers?

I'll make the coffee  ;D

I think the important things are (some of which you've mentioned):

  • using the BT speed tester to see if the speed problems are being caused by a profile issue, or even poor throughput;

  • getting the stats from the router and interpreting them;

  • using the NTE5 to see if internal wiring is causing low sync;

  • what can be done if internal wiring is causing problems:
    - filtered faceplate
    - removal of ring wire
    - re-wiring of extensions with twisted-pair cable.

ducky22

I think we need to make sure things are a clear and simple as possible to follow.

g7pkf

The main problem i have is getting photo's and wiring diagrams, I can see it very time consuming to make up the different scenarios.

Probably the best way though so ill do that over the next week or so. and

getting a selection of links together to all the relevant parts won't take long what i don't want to do is use links that "may disappear" in a short time. I am going to try and get permission to "steal pages and photo's".

If you or anyone else fancies doing a particular section let me know and i won't do that part (or will hold of doing it).

planning on each section having it's own page.

and am planning on using adsl nation and clarity as a source of parts.

(personally i prefer clarity but ADSL nation come highly recommended by lots of others and i want this to be an un-biased approach)

Yes to all the above.

The only thing I'm thinking is that all this information is available on Kitz, for example:

How to interpret your adsl Line Stats
Getting Line Stats from your Modem/Router
Low SNR Margin & SNR Problems

I'm sure we could improve on it, but I often wonder if it's worth it if something already exists.

What do others think?

ducky22

I'll happily do a nice section on latency, interleaving, bRAS profiles and the connected bits and bobs?

I'd suggest using a CMS for this rather than static HTML content because that'll get quite messy.

Kitz is not a clear site at all. It does require a bit of knowledge on the subject first. Alternative resources/way of wording something can be very helpful if the enduser is a little unsure.

We do need to address a broad church in the process. I often rattle off "let me know your d/s sync speed, noise margin and attenuation" to be greeted by a blank look. So, maybe we need two paths here, (a) The technophobe who needs help establishing the facts, so that they can get someone to fix things for them and (b) the inexperienced, but happy to get their hands dirty, who needs the same help in establishing the problem, then step-by-step instructions on how to put things right.

It's probably that a supplier like ADSL or Solwise, would be prepared to provide photographs.

Yes there is a lot of ways this project could fork out.

To start with i haven't found a very simple guide for the average newbie.

i am going to look into "finding" a website i saw recently that listed how to get stats off a router (not kitz).

I have bounced this around with a few guy's in the office and the upshot was they all went far to technical for the average joe public.

SO initially this is going to be aimed squarely at the Mains plug wiring scenario people.
with the intention of when we get a "my speeds are rubbish post please help" we can point them straight at this site and then help them from there. Primarily i want them to understand the website and be able to simply go away do the steps one by one and come back when they have done all steps if they still have problems. Then we can assist further.

I do not intend to even explain snr attenuation etc at the start just get these figures for reference then work from the test socket and see if it's better and how to interpret if they are better.

Now i have written quite a few webpages but am not the best in the world (im a telephone server engineer).

Im going to spend the next week or so knocking together the start and then we can expand it from there.

now where's my digital camera.

I think Rik was right when he mentioned Solwise etc.  I seem to remember years ago seeing some brilliant help files on their sites.

Also ADSL Nation and Clarity.  The chance to get some free advertising would be a draw.

:)

In fact taking the thought further, perhaps there's no need to re-invent the wheel.
Several suppliers (Misco used to be one) had good explanatory help pages.  It could be done with a series of well-placed links!
