Thinking of migrating to IDNet but have a question

Posted this also on thinkbroadband so hope it is OK to post here as well.

Using Pipex at the moment , have been for years but not going to put up with this Tiscalli rubbish.

Anyway looking at the top package and I was wondering what exactly "Priority given at the exchange over standard ADSL traffic" is?

Is it just a low contention ratio or something else? Does it make much difference?

I just answered you on TB.

Basically, SuperMax was originally a business product afaik, and so was given higher priority on BT's network. Once you reach IDNet, you'll be going as fast as you can, no congestion guaranteed.

So, SuperMax may give you an advantage at peak times or if your exchange is congested. It will also, of course, give you higher upload speeds.

Do I get the MAC from Pipex and then when I have got it then put my order in with IDNet?

The reason I am on it, I don't oftern pass the 30gb download, but if you use p2p the extra upload in a Godsend.

Yes. MAC from Pipex. I requested mine last Tuesday, it arrived by email last Friday. With the large number of people like us leaving I suspect this accounts for the delay.

I didn't have to chase, but I was not tied in to contract and have no arrears so they had no reason not to process it asap.

Don't forget to cancel your Pipex DD as soon as your new service is up and running!

It's a doddle. Request the MAC key, they have five working days to give it to you. Your notice period starts from when you request the MAC, so pick your time if you want to avoid paying two ISPs simultaneously.

Once you have the MAC, either sign up online or give IDNet a call, 0800 0267237. I did mine by phone so I could ask questions.

I was migrated in three days.

Once you're signed up, you'll get an email from IDNet with your login details. You can then go to:

https://www.idnet.net/secure/

and set up your account, eg create email accounts (which can be used immediately), web space, blog space and a photo album.

Note that you can have as many email accounts as you want, maximum mail box size is 100MB, maximum attachment size is 10MB, POP3, IMAP and webmail are supported. You can organise filtering, forwarding and auto-reply to suit your taste.

Hope I'm not too late, didn't think earlier.... Don't ring the standard (and expensive) customer services number. Use the direct number for cancellations of 0845 0722865. Cheaper per minute and (for me anyway) went through after about 25 seconds on hold. Mind you that was last week, it might be a tad busier now!

Time to order the service from IDNet. I presume they ask for the MAC code when you order.

You'll see that the first stage of the order progress is to enter your telephone number. From that, they can tell if you already have ADSL (in which you can migrate for free) or whether it will be a new connection.

Another ex pipexer, I should be migrated tomorrow

I have to say as far as the last thing pipex have done for me, the service in the provision of the mac code was fairly efficient, it took four days for the email, and a letter arrived the next day.

That afternoon I phoned idnet and got a massive surprise

The phone answered in four rings, and the person who answered it actually helped me. I knew then I was doing the right thing.

Hope all goes well with your mac code and migration.

Dont forget to cancel the pipex direct debit after you've moved.

There's usually a slight overlap period where you'll be able to connect to both. As soon as your IDNet login works, you're migrated, though.

Mine occurred at 04.30 on the specified day. My previous IP was still connected but my connection to the DSLAM had gone from a fixed 2Mb line to 8128 Max ADSL as requested. Got an email from IDNet overnight as well, advising that the change was complete.

Excellent service.

Well according to the woman I spoke to they were just ringing to giving me my MAC number even though they had already emailed me. We will see. But I guess they would also have tried to offer me something.

Would IDNet contact me if there was a problem with the MAC code I provided as I presumed that was what Pipex were going to say?

When I got my first MAC from pipex, I gave it to ID and 5 minutes later (that long!) they called back with a problem. It turned out pipex had given my the MAC that I gave them (follow!) when I signed up with them.

Typical stupidity from them.

It took me another week's wait to get the correct one.
