You could do a lot worse than this 500GB one for £65...

You shouldn't have any, it's a reputable make and cracking value at that price - and you can never have too much hard drive space. :)

Thanks for the karma.

Just to add to the tread, I use a freecom unit which so far has been good with quite fast transfer rates. We also use some freecom units at work.

Yes, I have a 250Gb Freecomm, and it's given me no trouble.

I have a Freecom 160 as well, never any problems, it cost more than that Tosh 500 did.

I've got Maxtor, Seagate, Hitachi, Maxell (Seagate), Western Digital and Samsung - they've all been fine.

Yup. They're not all on the one machine though. :)

The notebook has two external HDs and a 2GB SD card.

The older desktop has three external HDs and a DVD-RW.

The newer desktop has three external HDs, one internal, a DVD-RW and a 4GB flash drive.

Of course, the most important files are also backed to every machine across the LAN. :)

I know Rik has been chewing his fingernails worrying that I might claim compensation from him if the hard disc he suggested is no good. Relax Rik, I ordered it just before 6.0pm yesterday, it arrived today just before 1.0pm, fantastic service. I am now half way through reorganising my discs prior to loading Linux Mandrix or a separate hard drive.  All is performing perfectly.

Great news - glad to hear it. How are the speeds (sorry, habit. ;)).

Give her an extra special Valentines day, then broach the subject the next day.
I'm getting a lot of stick of my wife, she reckons I think more of Eve (her name for my computer) than her. Wants to know if the new disk is for her as a Valentines gift. No answer to that! :react:

Back to the original topic. The service they gave was excellent. I ordered it just before 6.0pm and received it the next day just before 1.0pm, this was in spite of the fact that they only guarantee next day delivery if ordered before 5.0pm.

Excellent, BB.  I'm tempted myself, but can't really justify another HD at the moment.

I had one of these - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131304.

Nightmare! I couldn't get transfer above 1mb/second which incidentally is about the maximum speed of USB 1.1. I tried with Vista, XP and OS 10.4.9 - all the same results. I took the caddy to bits and plugged the HDD into my desktop (sata) and got about 30mb/second!

I called WD support who insisted my computer was at fault for not running the device as USB 2.0. Explained other devices worked fine and I've tried on 3 seperate machines with 3 different operating systems but they were having none of it. I told them to stuff it and bought a caddy from ebay for £10. Now happily copying quickly!
