I just joined the network and I have just run my first bt speed test how does it look?

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6170 kbps

anythoughts would be appriciated.

Thank you ;D

Profile is correct for the sync speed (I'm jealous), throughput is a bit low, what do you have MTU set to in Windows and the router?

I changed the MTU to 1500 it was set to 1492 ya I thought the through put was low too

Lance

Looks like another person with a great line!

Congrats on the sucessful mkigration!

It is a bit ironic that all of the Admin Team on here have lousy lines.
Anything and everything that I post on here is purely my opinion, it ain't going to change the world, you are under no obligation to agree with me, it is purely my expressed opinion.

Sebby

The throughput looks a bit low. It could be an MTU/RWIN issue, or perhaps exchange congestion.

Mandatory

My MTU is set to 1500 can I change it to anything else?

Sebby

Try the ping test. RWIN is also important, but get the MTU right first and see if it makes a difference. :)

Lance

I would set the router's MTU to 1500, and only change it within Windows :)

Welcome, they look great figures. You must have a great line

Well I have played around with the settings a little I found my ideal MTU to be 1462 so have changed that now. I'll run another BT speed test in a couple of hours once I can again and post them up :) thanks

Sebby

Just out of interest, did you get 1462 from the ping test? When you change the setting in Windows (perhaps with DrTCP) you need to add 28, so yours will be 1490. If you've already done this, ignore me.

Also, as Lance says, make sure the MTU is 1500 in the router. If it wasn't 1500 when you did the ping test in Windows, you need to change it and do the ping test again!

Right I did the ping test and set the MTU to 1462 in windows I havnt added 28 to it in DRtcp but I will now. Yes the MTU is set to 1500 on the router :)

Rik

What value are you using for RWIN?
Rik

Mandatory

TBH I have not touched the RWIN as I'm a little unsure of what to do and i didnt want to mess with it. However I would like too heh

Rik

If you take a note of the existing value, you can always return to it.

Personally, I prefer TCP Optimzer to DrTCP, and the same site makes pretty good recommendations for RWIN values. Take a look at this sticky.

Right I've taken a look and it recomended this "Choose RWIN between 76680 and 203060" so I have changed it to the higher end of the scale. I'm going to reboot now and see if makes any difference.

Ill brb or if not I broke something lol.

Ill send up a red flare to the north... look out for it on the BBC news at 6pm.. or else Ill brb :)

umm what now lol

I couldnt do the BT speed test you can only do them once every 3 hours.

So I did a DSL Zone speed test and I just got my highest ever speed of 6940 Kbps which I assume is a good thing heh

Once I can do the BT test I will!

Rik

Try the Namesco one:

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

That three hour rule is a real nuisance. :(
Rik

Mandatory

Namco is showing a 6776 download speed and a 213 upload speed.

That DSLZone result is about what I get, so I would think that is about as good as it gets.

You cannot complain at that speed, I bet it is one of the fastest up to 8MB  on there. ;)

no complaints from me at all!! I love it  I just wanted to make sure I was getting the most out of the connection speed by tweaking what ever I could :)

Rik

Your upstream speed looks a bit low, but that's probably the tester.
Rik

Sebby

It looks like things have improved (although the upload is a little strange, but probably just down to the tester). Try the BT speed tester when you can just to make certain. :)

Mandatory

#31
yes, the Namco test is nice to look at but I dont trust its accuracy for some reason heh

I think I can run a BT test at about 5.30. So ill try that :)

Ive noticed a difference in opening webpages since changing my RWIN setting...

Rik

Good, it sounds like you're going in the right direction. Namesco is usually pretty accurate for me, but then I have a lousy line. :)
Rik

I get 6855 Down and 379 up at Namesco.

I was wrong I could do another BT test so I did.

    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6378 kbps

The results are a little better than last time I think but still lower than DSL reports and Namco....

Rik

No speed test is entirely accurate as they all simulate downloading by some trickery or other. Find a good large file to download, 100MB or more and use a stopwatch to get the best idea of what's really happening. That said, notional overheads on an ATM connection are about 8%, so you're only 150-200k lower than you might be.

I'm happy with everything I just wanted to be sure i was getting the most out of my connection :)

Rik

As near as makes no difference. IAC, speed tests will show some variation each time, you can probably just sit back and enjoy the connection now. :)
Rik

That looks about as good as it gets, possibly a very slight bit more, but of course that is down to many factors outside of the control of IDNet, I would settle at that.

I know this is going to sound strange but here goes.

I have two computers in the house so far i have fun all the speed tests from my laptop in my office upstairs this laptop is connected by a cable to a router so far with the lap top I have had a top speed using different speed test sites of about 7.5 or so mb.

How ever Ive just run several speed tests from the computer which is down stairs and hooked directly up to the wall and im getting consistant results of 11mb how is this possible?

im not complaining just i dont understand lol

Rik

I don't understand the 'hooked directly up to the wall' bit, could you expand on that please?
Rik

Mandatory

sorry I realise now it makes no difference for some reason I thought I had a modem down stairs and then a router hooked into that in order to share the BB but I dont. I have just a router....

SO im confused Im still getting between 10-11ish megs down stairs but on my laptop im getting 6.5-7.7 ish still weired

Rik

Basically, you can't get that speed out of an ADSL connection, so the speed tester is being confused by something on that machine, possibly MTU/RWIN?

Afterthought, you're not connecting wirelessly and seeing the connection speed as 11Mbps are you?
Rik
--------------------

This post reflects my own views, opinions and experience, not those of IDNet.

Mandatory

Nope Im not connected wirelessly.... its all good I was ust like wtf is going on !!! or though secretly I was like woohoo !

Rik

So you've got an ethernet cable running from the router upstairs to the machine downstairs? I can only think that the MTU/RWIN setting is causing the problem and confusing the tester. :(
Rik
--------------------

This post reflects my own views, opinions and experience, not those of IDNet.

Mandatory

Yes I have a cable running up stairs. But I havent changed any of the settings on the machine downstairs so IDK

Rik

Me neither. Just rest assured that the tester has to be telling porkies, or BT has given you fibre to the home. :)

Why do you have to add 28? ive just "done the ping thing"  :D and it came out at 1430.  any idea where the mtu setting is on a speedtouch 585?

Not off hand. If you can't find it, I'll look at a manual later.

The 28 is the ethernet overhead, btw.

Hi Pup

Sebby has the answer on MTU or you here - I hadn't got through the CLI menu before I saw him. ;)
