i have a netgear dg834 which i bought from idnet, (i now have a 2700) i intend to pass the dg834 on to a friend who is in the process of joining idnet at the moment.

when he's up and running, i will need to change things like "user name, password etc" (although i do.nt think i changed them from idnet settings)

so if they do need changing can someone tell me how to get into the router, and how to change the details, also is there anything else i will need to change ?????

thx for any help :fingers:

You'll need to browse to http://192.168.0.1, input your router username and password - these will be admin and password unless you changed them - click on basic settings, and you'll see the boxes for user name and password there.

AFAIK, if it is set up for IDNet, you should not have to change any other settings, but I'm sure someone will be along to tell you otherwise if this is not the case.

If it's an IDNet configured router, all you should need to change is the user name and password, Merlin.

You can access the router set up by opening a browser window, and typing 192.168.0.1 in the address bar. Hit enter, and it will ask you for the username and password for the router (not the one used for IDNet).  The default is Admin / Password, but hopefully that's been changed.  Once you are in the router settings, click Basic Settings on the left hand side, and here you should see the existing IDNet username and password, which you can just change and click Apply.  Hopefully, that should be all you need to do, unless, of course, your mate is going wireless.

I'm pretty sure that's correct, but you may want to wait for someone more technical then me to confirm this.

Edit:  As Mad said, while my connection was throwing a wobbler.

Hi Merlin

The other things you may want to change are the SSID and the WPA key.

thanks mad and simon, think i,m ok with that now

rik how do i , and what would i change the ssid and wpa key to ???

Take a look at this FAQ Merlin for detailed instructions on setting up the 834.

The SSID is a matter of choice, something recognisable to you, but not necessarily to anyone else - whatever you use, avoid the default of Netgear, which makes a hacker's life that bit easier. WPA key, again whatever you like really, the more complex the better. There's a key generator linked to in the FAQ.
