Decided to have a quick look inside my mastersocket tonight,as i am fitting a filtered faceplate tomorrow and just wanted to see what the job entailed.
Only a case of removing the 2 screws, removing the plate, having a look and then putting it back but ever since doing it my sync has dropped significantly.

currently..

ADSL Line State: Showtime
Downstream: 384   Kbps
Upstream: 416   Kbps
Mode: ADSL2PlusAuto
Transmit Power: 11.7 dB
ADSL Link UP Time: 0 day 0 hour 30 min 51 sec
Operational Mode: G.Dmt

Item Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 5.0 dB 6 dB
Line Attenuation 54.5 dB  31.5 dB
CRC Errors 41207 73
FEC Errors 40091 84
HEC Errors 28139 114

Will it recover by itself,or is there more to it?

Simon

I'm just guessing, but you haven't pinched or dislodged a wire or something, have you Johnny?  Or maybe it picked up some noise when you were investigating the socket?  If he's not about tonight, Rik will be around in the morning, and will be able to help you.  I think Sebby and the rest have disappeared for the night now.  We have also had a few dropped PPP sessions tonight, but I don't know if that's connected to your issue.  Sorry I can't be of any more help.
Simon.

Night time is always a bad time to do work, the snr is always worse at night time so you probably have re-synced at a lower speed due to your snr, you could try re-syncing in the morning quite  early when the snr is generally much better  :)
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Rik

Remind me what your previous figures were will you, Johnny?

Hi Rik,these were my line stats before i looked inside the master socket..

ADSL Line State: Showtime
Downstream: 1856   Kbps
Upstream: 448   Kbps
Mode: ADSL2PlusAuto
Transmit Power: 11.9 dB
ADSL Link UP Time: 0 day 1 hour 11 min 17 sec
Operational Mode: G.Dmt

Item Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 7.0 dB 19 dB
Line Attenuation 57.0 dB  31.5 dB
CRC Errors 605 4
FEC Errors 52415 6
HEC Errors 469 2

Thes are the ones i have just took..

ADSL Line State: Showtime
Downstream: 480   Kbps
Upstream: 416   Kbps
Mode: ADSL2PlusAuto
Transmit Power: 11.9 dB
ADSL Link UP Time: 0 day 1 hour 16 min 21 sec
Operational Mode: G.Dmt

Item Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 6.0 dB 6 dB
Line Attenuation 54.5 dB  31.5 dB
CRC Errors 1808 4
FEC Errors 736 4
HEC Errors 1020 34

Rik

The figures don't make sense, as you've lowered attenuation but the sync speed has gone through the floor. It may be a temporary aberration, see what it's like in the morning, if it stays low then I'd suspect you've disturbed a connection. :(

This morning my line stats were the same as last night,so i have connected my modem directly to the test socket using a 20m roll of adsl cable, and things have improved somewhat. :o

test socket stats..

ADSL Line State: Showtime
Downstream: 2624   Kbps
Upstream: 448   Kbps
Mode: ADSL2PlusAuto
Transmit Power: 11.9 dB
ADSL Link UP Time: 0 day 0 hour 5 min 24 sec
Operational Mode: G.Dmt

Item Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 7.5 dB 18 dB
Line Attenuation 62.0 dB  31.5 dB
CRC Errors 3 0
FEC Errors 6 0
HEC Errors 1 0

I could certainly live with that speed. :)

Rik

That sync looks about right for your line attenuation, Johnny. A filtered face plate seems to be worth thinking about.

Morning Rik,i have just put the filtered faceplate on and these are the stats..

ADSL Line State: Showtime
Downstream: 2976   Kbps
Upstream: 448   Kbps
Mode: ADSL2PlusAuto
Transmit Power: 11.9 dB
ADSL Link UP Time: 0 day 0 hour 5 min 51 sec
Operational Mode: G.Dmt

Item Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 6.0 dB 19 dB
Line Attenuation 62.0 dB  31.5 dB
CRC Errors 4 0
FEC Errors 33 0
HEC Errors 2 0

The original faceplate no longer seems to work,so not sure what has happened to it.

At the moment the adsl cable is just trailing down the stairs ;D so i will have to tidy it up a little bit. :)

Not sure i understand this, just did a speedtest check..

Seems to conflict with my line stats?

Rik

The original faceplate not working could explain your earlier problem. Circuit board gone, maybe?

You seem to have gained a little speed from the filtered face plate, so there was some noise on your internal wiring, but for a 62db attenuation, you're doing OK. Enjoy. :)

According to my latest speed check test,my download rate has dropped through the floor, which doesn't seem to make sense given my line stats. ???

Rik

You need to do a BT test, your profile has probably dropped.

Hi Rik,is this the right test?..

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 250 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  2976 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 196 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Rik

That's the one, Johnny and your profile has, indeed dropped. You need to maintain sync for 3-5 days and it will recover.

I'm glad you found the cause of your sync issue, Jonny. Currently, your profile is still reflecting the old sync, and it's going to take 3-5 days to catch up, so things will be slow for the next few days! But all is well again. :)

Lance

Would it be a possibility to site the router next to the master socket and use either wireless or a long cat5 (or cat5e) cable? This may help produce better results than a lond ADSL cable.

Hi Lance, not really practical for the router to be next to the master socket as it is very near the front door and would end up getting bashed about.

Regarding my long adsl cable,i have fitted the cable but still have about 5m of slack. Is it fairly easy to shorten the cable,or would i be better off just leaving it.

My line stats have improved over the last few hours,SNR ratio has more than doubled..

Item Status
ADSL Line State: Showtime
Downstream: 2304   Kbps
Upstream: 448   Kbps

Transmit Power: 11.9 dB
ADSL Link UP Time: 0 day 1 hour 16 min 29 sec
Operational Mode: G.Dmt

Item Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 11.0 dB 19 dB
Line Attenuation 62.5 dB  31.5 dB

FEC Errors 225 1
HEC Errors 23 0

Finally received my speedtouch 585 today, another day, another router ;D and no discs with it either. ,so may as well set that up now.

Rik

Shorter is better, Johnny, but it probably won't make a huge difference - there's all that cable between you and the exchange. :)

Maybe if i yank the cable i can pull the exchange nearer. :D

Rik

Make sure you use some duct tape to secure the cable to the wall first!  ;D

The reason shorter is better is because the more slack you have inside your property, the more likely it is that it'll pick up noise. If it's got to be fairly long, make sure it's good quality, twisted pair cable.

Great router. It may help you even more. You'll find that you just plug it in, and as soon as you open up your web browser, it'll bring up the settings page. It's nice and easy. :)

Hi Sebby,i got my cable and filtered faceplate from adsl nation and fitted them today no problem.

Just tried to set up my speedtouch 585,but it appears it is locked into tiscali,so i am back using the Zoom router which has given me no trouble at all and was easy to set up.

Is there an easy way to unlock the speedtouch,or would it be a  :mad:job

Hi Johnny

Locked in in what way? Can you not just change the username and password to log in to IDNet? If not, try doing a factory reset. (Did this come from DSL Depot or somewhere else?)

HAMMER may be some times that works :P

Sebby

I suspect it's similar to what Sky do to Netgears, Rik. You should be able to flash it with the generic Thomson software, Johnny. I'm looking to see if there's any information on the web about it, but I can't find anything. Perhaps it's not actually locked to Tiscali. Can you not change the username and password?
