It's sped up again now - definitely intermittent.  Maybe they are actually working on it?

But the FEC errors will be having an impact on throughput, albeit mitigated by the interleaving. That said, it seems most likely that GW5 is having issues again. I'll let Simon know.

Well, I haven't a clue what that means, but I'm going to FEC off to bed, and hope it's better in the morning!

Simon.

I've passed it on to Simon, and I'll report back anything I hear. Curiously, there are no reports over on TB.

FEC = forward error correction, used to resolve data errors before it reaches the router. A high number often indicates noise on the line.

Just to randomly chuck something into an irrelevant thread, I thought I'd mention that my line dropped once tonight, about an hour or so, ago.

Most likely due to noise, as noise is at its worse around that time of night. I assume you didn't see any stats on your router at the time of the drop?

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  2400 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Rik

That's about as perfect a throughput as you can get for a 2k profile. I haven't heard back from Simon on the GW5 issue yet - I'm guessing he's busy banging heads at BT.

OK, I've had a chat with Simon, nothing is showing up on GW5 as an issue at the moment, so could Golden and Simon please contact support so that IDNet can run tests on your lines please.

Now you see that little side track down the Muddy Waters/Mannish Boy route has got me all hankering for a quick toot on my harmonica. Might have to unplug the VPN and have a musical lunch-break now!

Anyhoo, to actually add something to the real discussion I'm on gw5 and haven't noticed any speed issues over the period in question. If anything my pings actually improved yesterday evening when I looked at them and that's still true now. Pinging BBC at an average of low teens, used to be mid 20s...

Rik

Thanks for that, Si, looks increasingly like line faults then.

Dopamine

I'm GW5 too, and my line seems slow. BT speedtester just showed 2461 throughput for a 7150 profile:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2461 kbps

This is quite common for me. I rarely get above 4mbps unless it's in the dead of night, yet my connection is rock solid.

Rik

What's your error count and noise margin like?
