Very Slow Speeds - Can anyone help please?

Hi all

I recently signed with IDnet and my connection went live 3 days ago.

However, I have been experiencing consistently extremely slow speeds. See the attahced Speedtest:



I am lucky if my speed has actually reached this level. What is also so surprising is that my download speed (128 kb/s) is significantly lower than my upload speed (377 kb/s).

I know that Idnet have been rated very highly by users for their speed consistency and reliability. So this leads me to believe that it is something wrong with my configuration settings. However, the router I am using came pre-conifgured from idnet.

Here is the other relevant informaiton.

My operating system is Windows XP.

What you're seeing looks like a classic stuck profile. Can you carry out a BT speed tests and post the results please? http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/

If it is what I think, you won't be able to do anything quickly, and neither will IDNet unless you migrated in 'like for like'. In any case, let's see what profile BT has you on and we'll go from there. Could you also post your downstream attenuation and noise margin please. Given you're on an 8128 sync, though, you should be going flat out.

Hi Daniel

Do you actually live in the exchange?  ;D 6db attenuation - I'm jealous. With that, and a 14db noise margin at 8128 sync, you should have no problems getting the line to go flat out.

See if you can get the profile - I'm pretty sure that's going to tell us what the issue is.

As already suggestion by Rik, you've got fantastic stats, and the issue is what we call a stuck profile. As well as your sync rate, BT assign a profile (which is determined by the sync). You should have a profile of 7,150k (the highest) but it looks like you've got 135k for some reason. The results of a BT speed test will confirm this.

Stuck profiles are common when users migrated from a fixed-rate to a max service, but it's never usually as bad as you're seeing. Luckily, they do tend to clear by themselves after 3-5 days.

Once we see the results of the speed test and are able to confirm it's definitely a stuck profile, drop IDNet an email or give them a call tomorrow and they'll get BT to reset it. Then you'll be zooming along.

Here are my BT speed test results.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
   IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
   DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
   Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 93 kbps

So it appears my profile is extremely low.

I will drop IDnet a call tomorrow and thanks for all your help.

Hi Daniel

That's exactly the result Sebby and I were expecting to see. You do, indeed, have a stuck profile. If you contact IDNet with that speed test and your stats, they will apply a size 12 boot to the appropriate bit of kit for you (BT in this case!). :)

To be honest it's good it's a simple problem like this and not something with your line. It'll be sorted tomorrow. :)
