Possibly coming back to IDNet

Hi there, I was with IDNet for a good year over 2006/2007, I then went onto Virgin Media calbe service and I was gobsmacked at how, well words cannot describe how shoddy that service was. How is it that poor service is generally successful

Well I moved once more and this time signed up to Be* and yup, it has been mistake after mistake. When I first connected it went fine, no problems at all, was getting 11mb down and just over 1mb up and good pings. For two weeks then it all went to pot, now I am having pings overs 1000ms and everything times out.

I am going to get my MAC code and even tempted to pay the £40 cancellation fee as I have only been with them for 3 weeks.

I don't download much, maybe 10gb of Eve Online videos a month, some BBC iplayer stuff and game updates, all I want is a stable reliable connection

I guess I should have learnt after VM and gone straight back to IDNet, but I guess I was blinded by the cheap cost of the Be*package.

I'll be using a Draytek Vigor 100 + Linksys WRT54GL + Tomato also, so I guess that will be fine, I can't remember what method IDNet uses, is it PPPoE the Vigor 100 is simply a PPPoE to PPPoA and also MPoA bridge to the Linksys. Or will I simply get a static IP etc. to connect?

Hi Vader

Static IP, PPPoA (all IPStream products are on this). You're going to fall somewhere between Home Lite with 5GB and Home Max with 30GB. It might be worth starting on the former and paying the 'overs' (£1/GB) for the first month. You'll then have a clear idea of what your needs are, and can move to the best package for you (no charge). Since you were here last, the package has been expanded to include webspace, blog space and a photo album. You can now pay by direct debit, and you can get a daily RSS feed of download bandwidth, plus a projection for the month.

Looks like we both followed each other in errors, I too did what you did (but left Be after only a day, some kind of record) as they didn't support PS3's online gaming (they do port blocking), also like you, tried virgin media, so bad every night after 7pm/8pm, so did a month at Zen (so disorganised behind the scenes, didn't even set my email address up after a 4 week wait) so, I return to Idnet, and what a breath of fresh air!

Within moments of Idnet accepting my MAC code, the log in details to enable me to reset my D-Link 2740B ADSL2+ router were waiting in my hotmail account, from there, I'd set up everything from the idnet/secure site and set up new email address, billing etc, fantastic service

Come home here as soon as you can my friend

It seems there has been lots of good ISP's but as soon as they get swallowed up by the toscallis of this world, things go rapidly downhill.

I was with onetel, who were good for about 2 years, untill Talktalk took then over

I think the big problem we face, Malc, is that if IDNet were ever taken over, what would we do all day - as this place would surely empty out faster than Superman on a good day.

That would be a struggle. Zen and Newnet were on my shortlist when I cane to IDNet, but IDNet consistently beats them these days.

I don't think so, but anyone has to stop and think if someone offers a large wad of cash for their business, I guess. OTOH, IDNet is not an easy target, because of the other work they do, which a conventional ISP wouldn't particularly want.

I suppose that is good news, I guess toscalli and the like will study the clients that ISP's have first and realise that most of ID's customers would jump if they came sniffing, tha'ts why they go after pipex etc, with the majority of customers who are not tech heads.

Hopefully, Tiscali et al would be aware that IDNet had a discerning user base which had chosen the company for specific reasons. Add in the 30 day contracts, and there's virtually no point in trying to take them over as the prize, the user base, would be out the door as they were coming through it.

I had a chat with O2 a while back about their services, I wanted to know a simple question. If I moved to an area where they cannot provide broadband (LLU) how would I migrate from them, I was tempted at the time to the offer of £7.50 for their ADSL2 service (as I have an o2 phone) as it may boost my speeds and also for financial reasons at that time, but also once bitten as with orange twice shy you may say was my attitude as IDNet perform above and beyond my expectations in so many areas, anyway they did not know, three days later an email says they would charge me one months line rental and £50 if they could not provide the service at my new address. So unless you hunted for your new home by exchange you would be pretty much stuffed, great way to make money and in my eyes damn unfair, seeing small print like this makes you feel realise how unusual and fair IDNet are, in a money grabbing care for no one ISP world
