my grandson (bless his cotton socks, before i strangle him) using xp premium ,has somehow deleted the volume control off the taskbar, and all the slider controls etc in control panel.

i tried to use a xp disk and "sfc /scannow" but it keeps saying it requires some dll's off the second disk of the PROFFESIONAL xp.

now i've had this before and there is a workaround, but i can't remember what it is, can anyone please remind me.

this is worth a karma to you , because it will get "trouble" off my back !!!!! (pure bribary)

Rik

Control Panel > Sounds and audio devices. Check 'place volume control on...' :)

thx rik ,tried that, whole dialoque box missing ,which is why i wanted to do sfc /scannow

Rik

Can you do a system restore?

merlin

rik, no , the problem started before the earliest date in system restore, but he did'nt tell me, said he didn't want to look silly,
now you see why he's trouble !!!

Rik

The scan is not looking for the SP2 disk, is it? There isn't a second XP install disk, at least not on any of the three copies I have.

The cure is, get hold of the culprit, strap him to computer chair, leave him there until he fixes it, no food, no water. ;D

no it says it wants the second disk of xp proffesional to install some needed dll's

merlin

IN , why so mild a sentance , my thoughts are no where near so lenient. kids+computers= disaster

Rik

Does this help?

To display the volume icon in the taskbar notification area, you must select the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" check box in Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices applet. If, when you try to select this check box, you receive the error

Error
Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

you need to copy the sndvol32.exe image from your commercial XP installation media (not a vendor-supplied "recovery" CD-ROM) to the system32 folder by performing the following steps:

   1. Start a command session.
   2. Navigate to the CD-ROM drive by typing

      <cd drive>:

   3. Navigate to the i386 folder by typing

      cd i386

   4. Expand the sndvol32.ex_ file by typing

      expand -r sndvol32.ex_ %systemroot%\system32

Merlin, does it tell you which DLL(s) it needs?

If so, this may help you:
