dropped ppp

Hi

any body had problems getting a ppp session last night.

Couldn't get one at all last night, did't want to connect this
morning either to start with.

Did all the usual checks and pluged router in to BT socket
with nothing else connected.

Made no differance (so had a beer or three and food )

I've just had a look through my log and my PPP session was up all night, Steve. I'm on DSL4 though.

Must have been the router having one of its mood swings :)
it likes to drop the connection or just reboot now and then. :mad:

on gw5 by the way.

Simon is also on GW5, so that probably rules out IDNet, but it could have been BT working, especially if your 21CN conversion is in the next few months.

Must have been BT as throughput on bt speedtest has improved

normally around 5200

I think BT must have been working last night (I'm on GW5 too).  I turned on my router when I got home from work around 6:30/7, and although the line sync-ed fine, I couldn't establish a PPP session because it hung on 'checking username and password'.  I know that means a stale session so shut the router off; my partner put it back on 10 minutes later but the same thing happened, so I shut the router off again.  I wasn't sure if BT would need to clear the line so rang IDNet out of hours - Simon rang back within the hour (bless him!) and said BT couldn't be contacted until the morning, but that you need to shut down routers for 20/30 minutes to clear stale sessions.  At that point it had been off quite a while, so I turned the router on again, and all was well.  This morning, I again couldn't establish a PPP session, so shut the router off and went to have breakfast - turned it on again afterwards and all was well.  This has happened to me a few times since BT announced the rolling works - occcasionally BT has to manually clear the line, but mostly it will clear itself if you leave the router turned off long enough.

There's almost certainly work going on then. You may also find the voice line drops out from time to time.

Thanks krysia that about the same as me last night and this morning
didn't bother ringing last night as it wasn't a problem for me

Had trouble again this morning, and switching the router off for 45 minutes didn't solve it.  I rang IDNet, and it turned out it wasn't a stale session but some other unidentified BT problem that is affecting some users - sync is okay but you can't establish a PPP session.  They've got BT onto it, so it should eventually get sorted.  In the meantime, the advice is to keep powering down your router and leaving it off for ten minutes before trying again - eventually you'll establish a session.  It took me two goes, which wasn't too bad.
