Best modem to buy

I am going to get a spare router in case I ever need one.  From experience my router gives way at the time I can't afford one. So am going to be prepared
So which router is the best one to buy? I am using a mac. not that makes a difference I think. Thanks for your help guys - you all rock

One of the problems in recommending a router is that, since Max, there is no single 'best' router, it's a matter of what works with your line.

At present, on my shortlist would be:

Netgear DG834 (preferably v4).

Lots of users (it tied for top spot in a poll we held), IDNet supply and support them, it's very easy to set up and maintain, without detailed knowledge of the inner mechanics.

Speedtouch 585 v6

Very solid router, good on long lines (not an issue for you) but a bit more complicated than a Netgear.

2-Wire 2700 HGV

Available from eBay for <£30 or from BT for > £90. Very solid, business-class router which, for many people has improved their line's performance (eg I gained 1000k of profile from using one). More tricky to set up, though we'll give you lots of help, a bit large than most, but a terrific performer.

Given your line, I'd probably say go for the Netgear.
