Think my 2700 might be dying...

Over the last week, my 2700 has been acting a bit strange, and I can't help but think it might be on its way out.

Every so often, websites appear to stop responding. If I try to access the router, it tries to load but never succeeds.

I've actually been forced to reboot a couple times, which seems to sort it, but the problem re-surfaces. I thought heat might be a problem, but it's very well ventilated (on its side) and is by a window that isn't exactly draft-free!

If it dies, it will only be £9 spent, plus I have another on that DD sent (although I seem to remember it sync'd very slowly when I tried it, but I can always explore this issue at a later date). If both are no good, it will be an excuse to get a shiny new one.

I thought mine was on it's way as well last night, as I lost wireless connectivity again, but when I switched off the ethernet connected PC, it came back.  I'm sure I've had the two working together before.

Try changing the wireless channel to 1, Simon - that worked for me.

I set mine flat on the lil rubber feet it has , I take it this wont do it any harm ? If it does, where can you get the dedicated stand for it to sit vertically ?

I got the stand with mine, James. It runs cooler on it's side, but if you don't have a stand, pick up some feet from Maplins or B&Q and try to raise it by 1cm or so.

I was never able to find a seller of the official stand, James, so I just have it sitting on its side. Rubber feet are fine (in fact, a good thing to allow better air flow).

I just tried the replacement 2700 that I got from DigiDave some months back. When I originally tried this replacement router, I found that it sync'd significantly lower than the first, so I just stuck it in a cupboard and used the first 2700 I was sent (I just ignored the LED!).

As I think the 2700 I'm using may be dying, I thought I'd give the other one a try. It didn't sync low this time, but it sync'd, then lost sync and re-sync'd, so I'm sure there's something not quite right with it. It's going in the bin (unless someone wants it to have a play with for the price of postage).

So, I'll see how I get on over the next week, and if it's still playing up, I'll get myself a nice BT Business Hub. 8)

Incidentally, the 2Wire continues to amaze me. It's just sync'd at 5,152k putting me in the 4,500k profile band. Usually it sync's at about 4.6Mb, and my previous SpeedTouch 585v6 - which is a very decent router - struggled to even get that!

Not from BT, from eBay. I'd never pay £90 for a router, especially not from BT.

There's loads on there; a lot of BT Business Broadband customers obviously don't want them, so they be had for under £20 delivered.

I hope my single SSID 2700 isn't dying, because I love this router. But I'd be reluctant to get another one as I think problems are common.

It's hard to judge the reliability of the 2700 as they are all second-hand. When they work though...

I have had 4 off Ebay that were still completely unopened, many small offices already have their networks up and running when they change over to BT and so never even open the box the free router came in.

I find that the "Buy it Now" sellers are usually selling used, or at least tested routers.

It now appears that when a Dual SSID router has been re-booted more than 10 times and is using a non BT username , it changes it's provisioning info to a default setting.

The router thereafter fails to connect to the BT provisioning servers and seems happy enough to carry on abandoned.

Mine's a single (brand spanking new) and works a treat synching @7150
Only thing, I had to pay just under £40 for it (inc postage).

That's true, but a lot of them are sealed so much be brand new.

Just a little update; everything seems okay tonight. Last night, I thought I'd flush the DNS resolver cache, and that seems to have sorted it. I'm not entirely convinced it's permanently fixed; after all, during the periods of non-responsiveness, even the router wasn't responding via its IP address. But we shall see...

I had issues in the end with the wireless range of 2700 and on setting 1 some devices would not connect on a dual SSID version for me, the Netgear did not drop connection nearly as much, but the 2700 never had any reboot issues and never had browsing issues, trouble for me was It messed with my home network and some applications, I am not adept at port forwarding and many of my utilities use upnp (the netgear DG834G does not allow dns servers to be changed via upnp so I'm not worried about its potential downfalls, and I need that feature.

If you think about how any times you may buy a new 2700 off fleabay if the second hand ones fail a lot it, maybe worth spending £90, then you have a guarantee if issues occur and can get service repairs and replacements and new firmware updates for the unit and the firewall.
