Attenuation?

Me again!!

I was doing a little fiddling about with my 2700 router last night and noticed something strange. My current Attenuation is a nice 23.3dB with a 6dB SNR, however when i plug it directly into the test socket it jumps up to 26dB, nothing else changes i mean my sync still remains at 8128kbps. Is this normal? it seems by plugging into the test socket my line distance increases.....

Unplug it and replace the cover of the master socket and the Attenuation returns to 23.3dB.

Any info greatly appreciated.

Hi Jester

That's weird. The only things I can think of is that the additional wiring changes the impedance of the line and thus affects the attenuation (this my be gibberish on my part, of course), or that the connection you are making inside the test socket is poorer than in the faceplate for some reason.

Strange, either way, so if you're concerned, give support a ring - they may have some sensible answers.

I'm not really that concerned enough that it warrants a call to support just one of these this that baffled me. I've not noticed anything wrong with my connection or line so i guess if it's not broke then don't fix it. All i wondered was if any of the more technical minded regulars ( or should i say Hoobs!!!) could shed any light on it.

I had a word with Andrew, Jester. He's come across this once before, it's not logical, but the conclusion was that somehow the extension wiring improved the filtering rather than worsening it.

ADSL is a strange beast. As it doesn't change sync, I wouldn't worry about it, though at least we know the probable reason now.

Riks first assumption was the best.

lines have 3 factors.

resistance
inductance
capacitance.

something in your "extra" wiring is changing one of the above for the better as far as the adsl is concerned.

probarly one of the latter 2.

lookin at this again i suspect that its because you are so close to the exchange that extra wiring "helps".

and with stats like that (you lucky bugg*r) why worry.

Thanks for the info. Though i wasn't worried really just curious and wanted some insight into it...always good to learn as much as you can about ADSL i say.
