Had a good read through this forum, new to idnet (well over a month) and speed is really poor. What is up with my connection? Im on Home Max BT Ipstream Max. Local exchange able to knock out up to 4Mb and its to a new housing area but below is the best test result yet. Miriam should be on the case but im already looking elsewhere.

It might have been better if your first post had contained more facts about what has been said by Miriam.

As you are the only one here reporting slow speeds do you think for you its IDNet's end  and the rest of us are just lucky or maybe its your exchange thats the problem.

Until you get answers from CS what id the point in posting "Miriam should be on the case but I'm already looking elsewhere"

miriam has just asked me to prove my fears by using the BT speed tester link and emailing the results - which I have. I asked this forum as other posts have provided helpfull advice and it might be a simple setting that somebody has experienced beforehand but one that i cannot find

I dont believe I am the only one reporting slow speeds as there are many reviews about over the last month on a similar subject regarding idnet. The exchange is kicking out +4Mbs speeds to another user I know on the BT Option 2  Package so yes i do think it is ID net end.  The point of saying I am looking elsewhere is to provoke an answer similar to " you would get this with whichever ISP you choose"
Maybe you are lucky with your speeds but perhaps not with your manners. Thank you for your comments I shall know better to ask a civil question next time on what I thought said at the top 'questions, answers, support'.

I didn't mean to sound ill mannered , i was trying to point out your post came over more of a rant than a request for help.

This is an unofficial forum set up by users for users ,  saying you are leaving before Miriam has had chance to help was probably not the best way to end your first post.

Hi,( if you're still reading), it's not as simple as you present it. 

Two houses next door to each other could be getting wildly different speeds - it depends on so many factors, such as internal wiring in your house, the route your wiring takes to the exchange (not necessarily the same as your neighbour's), the condition of the wiring to the exchange , could have corroded connections and the like, the model of router you're using (some are much more sensitive and give better speeds than others).
And then there's the possibility of exchange or network congestion, which is getting worse all over the country now that so many people are trying to get "up to 8Mb speeds", and the congestion on the servers you're downloading from.

It is also a possibility that it could be something to do with IDNet, but since they do no traffic shaping and would appear to have adequate capacity for the number of customers, I'd put this quite low down the list. 
I've no axe to grind either way, but having just transferred from an ISP where they DID shape/throttle the traffic constantly, and had far more customers than they could provide a reasonable service for, I can tell an immediate improvement over them with IDNet, whatever I am doing and whatever time of day I do it.

My advice would be to let Miriam try and help you to identify the problem.

Add into the mix internal home POTS wiring and the infamous micro-filters (quality, on all the sockets ? Yes even your Sky box !)
There's a myriad problems that need to be investigated and eliminated before we start jumping up and down on an ISP OR EVEN BT's heads [ooh pained me to say that !]

Here's a challenge for some of you eager beavers...a blow by blow setup routine for a usb mode / adsl router / wires only install. Keep the references simple and readable by non-techies and as generic as possible as well...we're not all using ZyXel routers ! If you want to do this in conjunction with someone else feel free !

No prizes for doing this...just your peers undying envy and getting a mention in the FAQ ! :laugh:

I left 2 weeks ago but I am coming back as soon as I can.

My pings suddenly went up to about 40ms from 25/30ms and I stupidly thought this was because of IDNet and by migrating I would fix it. Now, where I am my pings are 5 times that (200ms) and speeds are apalling.

So Simon, if you are reading this - leave the key under the mat ... I'm coming home

Good point there max.

That's the trouble, most people immediately blame the ISP when (unless it's Plusnet), the ISP is way way down the list of suspects.

But now there's another possible cause  from one of the other threads: -  if anybody is running slowly, check to see if wolverene's son is running bearshare on your machine. :banana2:

The trouble is that mostly it is the isp's fault (even more so if alot of people are getting the same results)

Take yesterday i recorded a new low of 85kbs now on a max adsl connection that is unexceptable and then to day it was back to 5-6mb and tonight im getting between 200-500kbs.

Many thanks for the sensible answers. CS has got back with facts and figures from the bt tester results and basically blame the exchange - which i believe someone did mention.

It is easy to blame the ISP as that is who we are paying for their services and when their services dont quite match to those as advertised they should always be the first port of blame. If you buy milk from the supermarket and it is off when you get home, you dont try and take it back to the cow do you?!

I think this does lie a little with the ISP whether it be IDNet or anybody as I think the great monopoly that is BT will always better their own services than that of competitors in an attempt to win back the customers. Trouble is now I may as well cancel my line completely as this is all I use it for so BT loose out altogether.

You haven't thought your analogy thro' I feel.
You take it back to the Supermarket because, if the Supermarket has enough complaints, and couldn't get satisfaction from the supplier,  they could change to another.
The ISPs unfortunately, except in certain cases, don't have that luxury.

Analogies are great, especially since they can be picked and chosen at will to demonstrate the same issue from very differing viewpoints.

Another analogy could be:

Somebody I know bought his petrol from my local filling station, and his car goes a lot faster than mine. I think its the petrol stations fault, since we bought the same product from them.

They would argue that they provide a product which is limited by factors out of their control.

Nerval, just read your post relating to my Son, very good. Just hope PN dont spot it as he will be used as one of their excuses. Would show it to him but hes not in a good mood at the mo- wrote his new car off a coupla nights back.
Getting back on subject, it is difficult, as an enduser(as in customer!) to accept that our ISP is unable to press a button and fix our problem, but as has been said, there are so many variables. Suffice to say that IDNet are by far one of the best ISP when needing action, but they are at the mercy of their supplier. So given the chance they get results as quick as is possible- and you can talk directly to them.

I got here using a searcher, i been having problems with my wifi for several days and its getting worst every day. I think everytime i do a
adsl speed test my speed decreases. may it be possible? i tried opening some ports as a friend told me, can somebody help me?
