Thanks for posting that Rik - it's Saturday and reading the papers in bed takes precendence over the computer.

Very sensible. :)  :thumb:

Thank you both for those really clear instructions - I also found an ATI Hotkey Poller that I don't need to run and removed that at the same time I removed Kservice from MSCONFIG, so the default position now is that neither BBC iPlayer nor 4oD will open unless I re-tick the Kservice box, which is just what I wanted, as I'm not likely to use either of them very often.  (A tip for others who are new to this, as I was:  if you permanently disable a service and then want to enable it temporarily, tick the relevant box and then exit without restarting.)

Rik

Good tip, Krysia. I use the two applets to kill off all sorts of unwanted detritus, the ATI poller being an obvious one.

Anyone know what the difference is between KHost and KServices?  Now that I've disabled the latter, I've found that I can still open the iPlayer and 4oD (by right-clicking and clicking 'open' but not by double-clicking the icon) and then KHost appears in the Task Manager processes, whereas before it was KServices.  I'm hoping it means it allows the programme to download what I want but not for stuff to be uploaded from my computer.

A quick Google came up with this, Krysia:

The khost.exe process is used by the kontiki 'delivery management system' (DMS). The Kontiki DMS system is used to share and track files across a network or the internet. If you access data that is provided using the Kontiki DMS system you should leave this process running. Otherwise, it can be terminated.

Thanks for that, Rik - I'd googled before posting and seen that explanation but didn't know how to interpret it!  I wasn't sure if it meant it just delivers the files to the computer or that it delivers them both to and from the computer.

Rik

I read it as you need it to access the files, regardless of sharing, Krysia. :)
