We use a proxy which is locked via a network security team to force it's use, anytime that a computer comes in for repair, any p2p or any other unauthorised software is removed and the user 'educated'.

good stuff mate, whitelisting, nac etc are the way to go for sure, however as we both know, if you try hard enough, theres  always a way to circumvent the admins, regardless of proxies, firewalls and everything else.

Since I have joined my college games have somehow spread from my usb pens to other peeps usb pens then to the computer's hard drive...

Its untraceable to me but still...a hell of a lot of games are on the computer's C drives. I wonder when they do their annual format? Summer hols probably

We even set up a "secret server" which they werent aware of using the temporary folder kinda thing

Worrying  :D

Rik

Excuse me, Sam, I'm just going to quarantine you before you start picking on me.  ;D

I like the use of the term "educated" - sounds like you tie them to a chair and brainwash them or something  ;D

Phew, its great when you're the network admin and all the dodgy stuff is on your workstation no one else has access to :-D.

Danni

One of the reasons I'd like to be the network admin is because I know a lot of the methods for getting around proxies and stuff, as I did it at college :P I didn't like when the IT staff called me in because the students were using a proxy on my server (in the US) that I refused to take off- I used it as I could access it via IP if I needed to, when DNS went down. It was also useful for testing if a URL was working, as it excluded anything local.

games in college are fun

till you get pulled in for being the ring leader though i got out of it due to me and danni telling the Lecturers what we were doing.  (not are fault they used the ideas instead of reporting it)

but gateshead network was a little lacking back then. (and proabably still is)

You should try something like this with the DWP. You're lucky if you can view a website it's that locked down. Intranet run through a proxy blocking mountains of websites (including play.com annoyingly) and applications.

You actually can't install anything on our network. I've figured out a way to do it, but the one place you can do it is actively monitored, and you get sacked for doing it, so I think I'll leave that alone :D

Colin- the DWP is behind government firewalls. Also known as one of the few things they do right.

Not 100%, but I've heard it's very secure from a few people.

Yes, basically all info is on a server based in another area. There's nothing actually on the system itself, bar M$ packages and other software we use. We've got no physical contact with any info and in order to get it we have to complete forms to get it. If anyone accesses ANYTHING without permission, you're out of a job :)

Obviously the actual benefit claims, we can touch or no one would get benefits :D
