Hi,
In the last week or so i have been unable to play bf2142 online because my pings are going from normal mid 20's to anywhere up to 1000 in the space of a few seconds then back down to normal. I don't lose connection to the servers it just gets really laggy for a few seconds then it's fine again. There is no set time that it happens it just comes and goes. I have turned the router off over night ,unplugged sky boxes and phones and it still happens. I have not got a test socket. Speeds seems to be OK. Here's a bt speed test.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 4000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  4800 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3654 kbps

I have left pingplotter running awhile and it only shows a few really high pings at telehouse-gw3-g0-1-400.idnet.net [212.69.63.243] every now and again but nowhere near the rate i get when in a game.
I have done scans with Avast, AVG Antispware, Spybot, ASquared, Superantispyware and looked at hijackthis log and nothing shows up.

Any Ideas?

:welc: :karma:

Given the information you've provided, there's nothing that looks wrong. I would suggest you send support an email with the details, and they should look into it for you.

Sorry that I can't be more helpful, I just don't believe anything in your setup is to blame. :)

Thanks for the reply. I filled out a contact us form from my idnet account and said about my problems in the comment section. That is what that is for right? Just tried to have a game and seems no matter what time it is it still does it. Browsing does not seem to be affected. A few people in the Idnet section of the thinkbroadband site look like they have the same problem but related it to World of Warcraft. Just gets me that I can't get the same results on tracerts.

That should be fine. :)

Just found this http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/04/05/avast-update-causing-issues-with-wow/ and it does not say about latency just keyboard and mouse lag but i get that problem too with battlefield. Avast update was on the 30th i think, can't remember when this started but could be linked? I turn all unneeded processes and services off including avast when i game so i cant see how it affects me but who knows what happens in these PC's. I even replaced both sets of battries thinking it was them. Worth a try I guess.

Edit= Thought I'd take a look at the Avast forum and it looks like the update is affect a few games with high pings and keyboard & mouse issues. All seem to be ATI users and I'm Nvidia though. Going to try out some of the fixes and then revert back to 4.7 if they don't work. Hopefully this is my problem.

Right, I uninstalled Avast 4.8 and have had my ping stay rock solid on 25ms for about the last hour and a half no 1000ms in sight lol. Just hope now that it's Avast and not because its 4am and everyone is in bed! Will try it out again tomorrow.

 :fingers:

It does demonstrate how obscure some of these issues are, often coming down to a particular combination of circumstances.

FYI, the best way to contact support is support@idnet.net, as this gets seen by everyone at IDNet. :) Let us know if things are still OK tonight.

I have played a few rounds of battlefield 2142 today and this evening on the same servers as always and my pings have not gone above 25ms. yay!! Actually it felt smoother than it has in a long time. Maybe it was affecting it a little even before the 4.8 update.

That's good news, Juice. One more question to ask people. ;)
