If you haven't done so already take a look at MSGTAG. They offer a free version (limited functions) and an upgraded version with all the bells and whistles.

It's a great little program that takes the uncertainty out of emailing by allowing you to deliver messages, rather than just sending them. MSGTAG lets you know when the emails you've sent are opened. It means you're not sitting around wondering whether your recipient has received your e-mail or not -- you'll know as soon as they see it.

Their website is www.messagetag.com

Looks very good.
Sadly, the only version that works with Gmail is the $60 MSGTAG Status. :o

And it doesn't work with Hotmail at all, not that I like Hotmail.

Thanks for your input.

MSGTAG does not work with Hotmail as you rightly say. BUT it does work with Gmail perfectly as I am running it at this moment in time.

The free version, with obvious limitations will work OK.

MsgTag + at $19.95 (approx £10.00) works fine.

MsgTag Status at $49.95 (not $60.00 and approx £26.00) works fine (I am using it now without problem)
The prices quoted are on offer until 1st November 2006. I would think that this offer would be available again at some future date.

Don't hesitate, go for it now, they are a VERY reputable company.

Thank you for your input.

I don't know many (if any) of my recipients who would know what 'graphics' are , let alone turn it off. Pipex for one don't know how to switch it off! I know from personal experience. When dealing with an 'iffy' company or situation it is a valuable tool.

Hi quandam
I got the price of $60 (OK, $59.95) from the link you gave - can't see your lower price anywhere.

And I tried it with Gmail but it wouldn't go, so while looking to see where I'd gone wrong, I found the statement that it only works with the Status version on this FAQ page.

Are you saying though that if I follow their installation instructions, then the free version will work with Gmail?  I'd certainly like to use it if I can without paying that much.

(And I don't user Hotmail, just mentioned it for other readers )

Thanks for your email.  Yes, you are right MsgTag does not work with Gmail in the free and MsgTag Plus versions....sorry. I went straight onto the Status version and assumed, wrongly, that the others would do the same.

But I am right with the 'on offer' prices this link gives details. http://www.msgtag.com/download/

So, if you are desperate for it to work with Gmail your only option is the Status version but as it is a 'one off' payment
over a period it is pretty good value. Have to say though, setting it up with Gmail  was not a doddle but eventually after several goes I managed it and if I can manage it anyone can!

Consider the full version (or any version for that matter) it is a great tool especially when dealing with dodgy companies who say they haven't received your email etc. etc.

Good luck.

Nerval

Thanks for that.
I'm sticking with Gmail, as I've been really happy with it and it's ISP-independent.

Found the offer price now, so I think I'll give it a go.  After all, what can you get for $50 these days? (Don't answer that, I'm sure my wife will tell me!).
Much obliged to you.

Nerval

I was sure there used to be an Edit Post button, but I can't find it.

Anyway, on checking the link again, the closing date for the offer is 1 Nov 2005.
When you click on the Buy button, it adds $10 and comes up with $59.95 as the price.
Ho hum. :'(

BassoProfundo

Yes, I found exactly the same. $59.95. However, still decided to buy it and will mail their Customer Support to find out about a refund of the $10 worth of offer.

Nice little utility though. Already been useful ;) Yet to try it against GMail though.

There is - "Modify", next to the "Quote" button, or use the little "pen and paper" icon on the right of the message body.

Does anyone know what MSGTAG does if the recipient, like me, seldom fully opens an email but reads it from thr "preview" pane (MS Outlook)

I thought there used to be, but it's not there now.  Very odd.
There's no little pen and paper symbol either.

Oh it's just reappeared and I'm using it.
Must only be within a short time of you posting I assume.

Bill

Have just sent a message to myself (I must get out more!) and MSGTAG worked whilst the message was in the 'preview pane' and unopened officially.

Hope this helps to make your decision.

Isn't this a lovely useful  thread! Sensible and valuable posts and sensible and valuable answers! (So far!) Maybe we are all learning something from the thread unlike other threads where nothing is being achieved.

It's useful information, anyway- thanks :D

I'm not usually too bothered about email receipts, but I like to keep tabs on the options available...

Simon (the boss) was the first lucky recipient of my first MSGTAG'd email earlier today ... I'm migrating back to IDNet after a brief period elsewhere ... he read the mail 19 minutes and 43 seconds later. So he's got no excuses for not answering me  ;D Worked like a charm.

BassoProfundo

Ahh, now it becomes clear.

Q: Why doesn't the MSGTAG site acknowledge and action the $10 discount, valid until 1st November?

A: The discounted offer ended on 1st November 2005 !!!  ::) (Just had a response to my e-mail to MSGTAG support)

Odos

Does it still work if people do like me. I download my mail but don't read it at all till I'm offline ( I'm paranoid about security ) then delete it  :)

Cheers
Tony

From what I understand of how it works.... you've found a way round it  :D
