update.exe can't update?

I had to do a repair re-install of XP and I haven't been able to install the 87 hotfixes that are missing. I have tried manually and it fails, so I have switched auto update and on booting the update.exe runs and it downloads these, but all they are, are logs. Does anyone understand what they mean?
I know it encountered an error, but what and can it be fixed?

Why did you have to do the repair, MB, and what disc did you use to do it, eg XP, XP SP1, XP SP2 etc?

The computer was doing weird things, memory dumps and so I did a Disk check and clean using Tune-up Utilities and it found some problems with my C Drive and after checking it needed to restart to fix the problems, then it kept rechecking. So Sandra suggested I do a fixboot or fixmbr, booting from CD, which I didn't know how to do, anyway I ended up doing a repair.
Here is the link to that thread, http://www.pc-pals.com/smf/index.php?topic=24911.msg157864#new

And it's a Medion computer 8383, and the XP is home SP2.

It looks to me as if a bunch of files are missing from your HD, did you delete anything?

Lots, as I also ran Ccleaner and I also deleted programs I no longer used and anything that was a possible source of infections, some things that were a little questionable, keygens and other software. I also deleted my Kaspersky AV as it was slowing the computer to a crawl and was probably infected.
I had about three trojans and a couple of worms.

I hate software.  ???

MB, you may well be better off asking these questions at the Medion support forum, other Medion owners with the same/similar machine may well have a fix.

I have a Medion Computer, not the same model. ;)

Thanks In, what model do you have?

What In says, MB (but I expect you've already been there?). I just sense you may have deleted some critical files and that the quickest solution might be to bite the bullet and re-install from scratch.

Michael, did say I should format my hardrive, before I did the repair. He had the same computer as this, but we have replaced everything except he still has the old harddrive as a OS and application only drive. He did a repair and a couple of formats on it, so at least he knows what to do.
He also has been telling me to get rid of Kaspersky, but I wouldn't. God, it's annoying when he's right, which is happening a lot lately.
All I can say is, he takes after his mother.  ;D

And I haven't been to the Medion forum yet, I did post on Pals though, and I have googled it.

Regarding the 'repair' function, on the odd occasion I've had problems and tried to use that, it's always failed and I've had to reinstall.

Long shot, but have you tried system restore?

kinmel

Download and run Belarc Advisor.

That will identify any missing hotfixes etc and gives you a direct link to the correct Microsoft download page.

That will allow you to update each missing one in turn and maybe you won't have to do a re-install.

The 8385, never had a spot of bother with it in about 2 / 3 years. :fingers: :fingers:

Try the forum that I suggested MB, there are lot's of owners on there.

As you know, Medion's come with a " back up " folder, on a drive parition, how that works is beyond me, but I am sure someone will know. ;)

Thanks kinmel,
I ran Belarc after the repair to see what was missing, and tried to install them manually, but it kept failing so I turned on auto update see if it would do it, that's how I discovered the error.

Michael would have you believe that the only problems I have encountered, have been operator error.

I'll have a read about that back up folder, thanks for that, good thinking.  :thumb:

Have you got IE7 onboard? If you have this is a known issue, you have to uninstall it I believe then run your repair to get the patches, I remember reading this online as it caused people nightmares.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Its not IE7 it's a change caused by one of the updates for windows update, I got muddled, here is another quote about the issue

We received reports today that some Windows XP customers havent been able to install updates from Windows Update/Microsoft Update with the latest version of the Windows Update client. We are only seeing this issue when users have performed a œrepair on their Windows XP installation. I wanted to take a minute and let folks know what we know about this right now and what were doing about it.

After getting the reports, we began actively reproducing and investigating the issue. We have identified the root cause and the steps to resolve this issue.

Heres what we found: when an XP repair CD is used, it replaces all system files (including Windows Update) on your machine with older versions of those files and restores the registry. However, the latest version of Windows Update includes wups2.dll that was not originally present in Windows XP. Therefore, after the repair install of the OS, wups2.dll remains on the system but its registry entries are missing. This mismatch causes updates to fail installation.

If you experience this issue, you can contact customer service using the contact info at http://support.microsoft.com/security. Additionally, a KB article describing the steps to resolve this issue will be available soon. I will update this blog with a link to the KB article when it is available. In the meantime, here are the steps included in the KB:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:

      a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

      b. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:

            net stop wuauserv

            exit

2. Register the file that is used by Windows Update and Microsoft Update. To do this, follow these steps:

      a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

      b. At the command prompt, type the following command, press ENTER after the command, and then click OK when you receive a verification message:

            regsvr32 %windir%system32wups2.dll

            Note: for x64 machines regsvr32 %windir%syswow64wups2.dll

3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:

      a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

      b. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:

            net start wuauserv

            exit

Suggest you start the ball rolling with ...

Start/run/sfc /scannow

This prog scans the computer for missing windows files.

Have the orig windows disc handy as it may be requested.
