Might be worth running chkdsk as well as what sobraine said, to make sure all is in order

Suggest you start the ball rolling with ...

Start/run/sfc /scannow

This prog scans the computer for missing windows files.

Have the orig windows disc handy as it may be requested.

No files were missing. 

And I'm on the last install, IE7. I probably won't use it, but sometimes it's needed.
All up there were 107 updates.
