Intel slashes prices of Quad Core CPUs

Interesting, as I've just invested in one of these, I must have been fairly lucky this time as the model that I've got has only dropped by £13  , I usually find they cut about 30% off the price of anything after I've bought it, some models have dropped by much more than this.

Indeed - I remember paying £600 for a 1GHz Athlon when they first came out and it had dropped to under £300 by the time I had the machine built and running!

Just wondered if there is a real perceivable speed difference between quad cores and dual cores, or does it just depend on what you are doing? I've seen and read lab tests, but they're hardly real world are they?

I have a Q6600 which is quad core and on some things you do notice the difference, especially on multi tasking and CPU intensive Apps. However due to the lack of games and programs being able to fully utilise the 4 cores your better off with a Dual core at the moment I think.

I went for the E8500 45nm dual core, you can overclock it to 4ghz with air cooling and its as fast at some of the lower end 65nm quads for processing power, I think by the time quad cores are being used in apps we will be up to eightcore chips more than likely, technology is rushing ahead that fast

Q6600 seems very happy at 3.3GHz with 2X1Gb sticks. Idles low to high 20's,load never greater than 40,Using Tuniq tower and should get cooler as the thermal paste breaks in
