Hi, I'm back. One week on (more or less)

1]Namesco and 2]thinkbroadband tests are giving me

1] Download Speed: 5519 kbps (689.9 KB/sec )   Upload Speed: 382 kbps (47.8 KB/sec )

2]Speed Down 3357.56 Kbps ( 3.3 Mbps )
   Speed Up 378.37 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

just before that btspeedtesttest gave me

IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6154 kbps

so I am confused..these were all within about 5 minutes of each other c. 18:25 p.m.

Router
down
Connection Rate:  8128
Line Attenuation: 30
Noise Margin:     8
up
Connection Rate:  448
Line Attenuation: 17
Noise Margin:     26

Do I just ignore it or is there anything I ought to be trying. More out of curiousity that anything. (I just like to wind up those that can't get the btspeedtest working )

Thanks Jane

I'd say the BT one was the more accurate and reliable. For all BT's faults this does seem to be the one thing they have got right!! :fingers:

Thanks, that was my impression. I am still a bit paranoid about speedtests after being with Tiscali!

Seconded. When you can get to it, Jane, the BT test is the best guide. You're on the right profile for your sync, throughput is a little low, so your system may benefit from some tweaking.

I did the TB last night and today was the first time I had been able to use the Bt one and they had the same readings, the other ones I tried last night were well out if compared with the 2 mentioned, which I understand doesn't make them wrong  ::)

Oh well I had seen it before but there's nothing I can do about MTU. I am using Vista for a start and have router set to 1500 with autotuning set to highlyrestricted but, as mentioned elsewhere in the forums, it's set by IDNet to 1460. I don't know if 'fixing' the router and nic's MTUs would have any impact but I suspect not.
It was worth asking again though in case I had missed anything (any excuse to mess up Windows......hoorah for Acronis)

cheers...... Jane

You should have mentioned the magic word, Vista, Jane. I would have saved you a read. :)

I could try the XP or the Ubuntu machine later just for fun

There may be something going on with my line. MySpeed PC Lite reports Quality of Service as 21%. Up to now it's been 92-99%.
I'll just crawl back into my fougou and forget about it  ;)

Rik

Have you checked the logs to see if there are any indications?
