Ram and Graphics Card..

Just added a couple of sticks of memory from 7Day Shop, a matched pair, came with lifetime guarantee.

I also purchased a new graphics card as mine was a cut down version of an NVidea 6600, with no DVI, added an NVidea 7200, with DVI, all went without a hitch, which makes a change for me.

Yet to try the DVI, fingers crossed.

You're using a digital signal end to end, so there's no conversion losses and everything is just crisper and more stable.

As Rik says, it's digital to digital. When you use VGA, it's digital to analogue and back to digital, so there's some loss.

Wait a minute I just looked behind my monitor and I have a standard VGA adapter but no DVI slot. Only DVI is coming from my graphics card but I have a adapter on there. Does this mean I can't use DVI?

If the monitor has no DVI socket, you can't use DVI. Doesn't the monitor have a manual or on-screen display? That should indicate what your options are.

A lot of monitors still don't come with a DVI port, believe it or not.

Indeed Seb, my set up was the other way around, have both VGA and DVI on my monitor, bot only had a VGA port on my computer, I will give the DVI a spin in the morning, fortunately my Dell Monitor came with both VGA and DVI cables.

I think DVI is becoming more and more standard on graphics cards, though a lot of the lower-end monitors only have VGA.

I've got a pretty standard motherboard with onboard graphics, which has DVI only. We seem to be seeing a move towards this newer technology (which, believe it or not, has been around since about 1999!).

Let us know if you can see a difference.

When I bought this PC both monitor and graphics card had only DVI and I got a VGA cable

which, as it was 6pm meant a trip to Curry's (no were else open) to pay there ridiculous prices.

The one I bought had the gold coloured connections, as opposed to the one sent with silver coloured, and the Curries one was more solid and heavier, so a much better cable.

So, some good came from it.

There's no excuse either, In. What does a cable cost a manufacturer when they are buying them by the thousand? It's like cameras coming with no memory card (or one which is ridiculously small).

Agreed, or the printer that doesn't have a USB Cable that would cost the makers about 10 pence ... grrrrrrrrrrrr.

I think it was an error, as they sent the wrong one, and did apologise and send a new one when I rang.

That's great. DVI is just crisp by comparison to VGA, it's much more relaxed on the eye.

Just one thing that I have noticed, not a problem, is the background on here has taken on a very slight pink tinge, that I recall being discussed yonks ago.

It's because the colours are purer, In. It's actually an optical illusion, if you measure the grey it's neutral, but the blue/green around it gives it an apparent tinge. After a while, like tungsten lighting, the brain ceases to note it.
