Just had a power cut here lasting 40 minutes or so. I'm all to familiar with these occurrences so both my router and PC are protected by a Belkin 1000VA UPS. I usually sync to the exchange ~6200-6500kbps, however when the power went it caused my router to resync and it then connected at 8128kbps!

Not bad considering my downstream attenuation of 45dB ;D.

When the power was restored my sync has since dropped to 7072/448 - returning back to near-normal levels.

Would I be correct in assuming that the underground electricity cables are generating noise on the line, causing the sync to increase once the supply went off?

The telephone line is also underground if that makes any difference.

It certainly could be the case, Tom, that sort of difference can easily be explained by noise. I'm curious that the power cut caused a re-sync too, it sounds like it put out a lot of noise when it went off. The bad news is, of course, that no-one is going to re-locate your cables for you. :(

It certainly sounds plausible. As Rik says, it's strange that the power cut caused a re-sync, though it's possible that was down to the UPS.

You know what, that's just made me realise why mine has dropped recently. It's not dropped by much, but I've noticed there seems to be more electrical interference on this side of my house lately. I've no idea what'd causing it, but I'm assuming it's coming from next door as nothing has changed in the street or in the house (with the exception of sky multiroom in the next room, but not connected to the same phone line).

Yeah, that certainly sounds like what triggered the resync. I imagine there will be a few more yet throughout the evening :(.

Damn! Guess I'll have to persuade BT to build a new exchange next door to me instead ;D.

Sky boxes can put a lot of noise on the line, Niall. Is your wiring using a standard 6-core cable, with one pair being used to carry the phone and another pair the ADSL? If so, cross-talk can still be an issue. Try putting a second filter in series with each Sky box.

Otherwise, grab a MW radio, tune it off station and have a walk around listening for an increase in the noise level. If you come across that, take a look at what's nearby.

While you're at it, can you see if they'll do the same for me?

I don't see any problems with it, I just thought that might be it. I've just realised what was interfering the video receiver in this room though. Strangely it was the TV  ???

My TV interferes with my Bose iPod docking station. I'm still trying to work out how, and why...

The strange thing is that they're both 'on the same wall', ie not facing each other. Must be a hefty belt of IR coming from somewhere.
