Just phoned pipex to get my mac code, they said i will receive it in 5 days. Also asked me for a mobile number so they can contact me to make sure i get it!   i'm surprised to hear that they would go all out to do that for me. But i heard if they don't give me the code then they would get into trouble from ofcom?

Anyway i'll keep checking my mailbox this week for it, hopefully they will keep to their word.  :fingers:

They are bound by the Ofcom code of conduct to provide the MAC within 5 working days, Jim. I think they've had enough complaints recently to be wary of not doing so.

The phone call will be to offer you something in an attempt to make you stay, but they should have your MAC ready too.

Don't fall for their lies.

Even if they'd offered me a free year, I'd have declined.

Dont want to get your hopes up but although I phoned them the content of your call sounds similar, fingers crossed for you Jim because my mac code was very soon.......after such a conversation :fingers: :fingers:

I decided to ring pipex to make sure they had my correct email address to send the mac to, found out they send it via post. She asked when i requested it (monday) and said the mac code is on her screen now and i could write it down lol    Your spot on there david, very soon indeed eh

How do you tell if your on an LLU network?  it takes longer to switch to another isp i've heard and will  resync for 10 days or so?

Thanks

Hi Jim

Probably the easiest way to test whether you are LLU or not is to try the BT speed test. If that repeatedly fails to recognise you, you're probably LLU. Alternatively, give the MAC to IDNet, they will know from its format. It does take a little longer to migrate from LLU as physical work is required at the exchange, and you will experience some downtime (an hour or so usually). As the connection is, effectively, a new one, you then enter the 10 day training period, but not all lines make heavy weather of it.

Hi Rik

Thanks for the quick response.

I did the test got these results, if any good to you?

The speed test has completed on test server speedtester1.nat.bt.com for user 01********** and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of

964 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Your IP address is 80.42.221.**, your browser is reported as being Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and is running on Windows XP.

BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:

  For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
  For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
  For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
  For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

What URL did you use, Jim? Normally, you would have been given your IP profile and sync speeds.

If you didn't use http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/, could you try that please? If you did, it may well be an indication of being LLU.

Yep that's the one i used, bad news then Rik?  lol

Rik

I'm guessing so, but as I've never been on an LLU connection, I don't know for sure. A BT test normally appears like this:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 406 kbps

Though, hopefully, not the last line which was down to TalkTalk iirc. ;)

When I migrated from f2s LLU my MAC code started with "LL".

Rik

Thanks, Noreen. Did you ever do a BT test from LLU?

I don't think that I ever tried, Rik. My LLU connection, EasyNet not Pipex or Tiscali, was always good and very consistent. I only migrated because of their imminent sale to Tiscali.

Jim, I'd still be a suspicious of that "L". :)

Can you remember the format of your MAC, David?

Not to worry though, i'll probably be ordering my package tomorrow rather waiting further down the line for either pipex or bt to mess up. Be nice to get on a decent isp for a change  :P  (well, after the training period  :) )

You might find the training period is fairly painless, Jim - mine was. :)

Just migrated over to IDNET people  :)

Must of took roughly a minute on the phone to exchange details etc and checked my inbox after and have all the login details etc already!!!
I don't think you could get a quicker service could you?

Ive been given the activation date of april 29th, so is around the 5 day mark which is expected with me possibly being on an LLU  network, or that they don't count weekends.

Was just wondering at moment my router settings with pipex/tiscali are ATM Encapsulation: Bridged LLC    because VC-MUX gets me disconnected at random times.  I see IDNET require VC-MUX so do i used Bridged VC-MUX or Routed VC-MUX?

Thanks
