Memory is all fitted in the same way, so don't worry if it looks any different to yours.

David

Just received an Email from crucial systems and they have given me the exact memory sticks for this pc so all I have to do now is order them...really nice Email and even apologized for being late..good price I think £15.85 for  a 512 and I need 2 so thats cheaper than I thought it would be...I had held off ordering until I was sure but I just Emailed the scan results over to them and they identified the part numbers...thought it might save the hassle....so all good here,If this proves a success I will do the same with the other desktop and then the Toshiba laptop.reading the manual on the new one its just a case of unscrewing the back cover and there it is.
What improvement am I likely to see.I don't expect speeds to improve Im hoping  that improving memory will just make life easier for the systems if that makes sense..be a good experience and give me a little more knowledge if not a lot more RAM  ;D

Great service from Crucial, sadly RAM for older systems is more expensive than it is for newer systems, supply and demand I guess, additional RAM can only help things ..so it will be money well spent, as well as the experience gained. :thumb:

More RAM = more speed with Windows, David. It will stop the hard drive being thrashed (if it was) and will allow you to run more apps simultaneously.

I think its cheap to be honest In,This desktop is about 18 months old.the other one upstairs must be 4 years old and then the laptop is about is about 4 weeks old...but the prices for this one are good..and saves me from spending around £80 just to get someone to do the work, but this didn't include the price of the RAM ! but Im a little wiser now thanks to you all on here..and getting a little more confident in carrying out jobs which I would never dreamed of attempting  ;)

Sounds daft but just want to do it Rik...for the satisfaction of,although a seemingly simple task but to know I have done it....

Once you have, David, you'll realise it's a bit like plumbing - all the attached mystery the trade likes to put on the work doesn't actually mean it's that difficult, providing you use a little common sense.

I hoped it would be like this Rik..I have split things up in my mind to learn..Ie memory the web, hard drive, motherboard.router etc and over time I thought learn what these things do and when ready should be able to understand how each part interacts with the other and hopefully have a greater understanding of pcs.  trying to understand the whole package at once is for me a big no no..for instance in my mind, take the router, this is nothing to do with a pc.its just a carrier so I need to understand this before I can even hope to grasp its performance  and many other things like syncs etc but I will get there. :)

Think about how you are plumbing the bathroom. You don't see it as a whole, but as a series of joints connected by bits of pipe. Computers are a bit the same.

They are indeed, Rik. When you have a look inside, it actually makes a lot of sense. It's very logical. :)

Rik

It's also very modular and, just like plumbing, they usually hide something behind something else, so you end up taking it to bits for what should have been a five minute job.  >:D

I agree that it's cheap David, all I was trying to get across is the fact that RAM for the latest machines is cheaper than that for older machines, am example is I got 1GB of Ram for my new machine for £10.99 delivered from PlayCom, that would cost more than double that for my main computer that is nearly 3 years old. ;)

It is indeed. If it's for a fairly current PC, the likelihood is that it'll be in plentiful supply. Older machines that use more obsolete types of RAM are definitely more expensive.

David

Well just ordered from Crucialsupport the 2 512 RAM that will double the existing and I ordered a wristband as well, assuming this is to conquer static..
The Toshiba RAM at present 1 GB will on completion of the desk top will be doubled but I was surprised as I thought being Toshiba as opposed to NEC it would be dearer but it is nearly half !

Then I have the notebook to look at have been looking up on the support website and can see how to carry this out.

Then the other desk top which started all this with Midtown Madness as this is the oldest machine I see there is virtually no  space at all on the HD so that one will get quadruple the speed (as per Riks advice) it has now and I will also go that bit further and replace the DVD,Im keeping the jobs fairly easy and at a slow speed to get to know and hopefully gain some confidence... and a better machine
I will turn the oldest one into a mini project where it is learning,ok it will cost but the experience I hope to gain will pay for itself and I could end up with a cracking little machine..if not no real harm done  :)

Rik

With the cost of HDs as they are, David, you may want to think about putting a new drive in while you're there.

It is David, I never bother with them to install memory, I just earth the computer chassis/self by touching a cold water pipe, but better safe than sorry. :thumb:

I thought that although the memory is easy and no real chance of damage I got the wristband for future jobs which may be prudent to be wearing it.....

I will check the HD out though at the earliest..I have taken a look and see its the same make as my Sky + box,is it in fact the same part looks the same,or is this a dumb question.same make same shape

Rik

Most HDs from a particular manufacture look fairly similar, David. Just check the power and data connectors for compatibility.

It may well be the same as the one in your Sky+ Box David, no way to tell without looking at them closely.

As far as I am aware there are IDE and the newer Sata type drives, I am guessing that yours is the IDE type.

Rik etc. will know more. ;)
