Ubuntu 8.04

The updates to Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop and Ubuntu 8.04 Server on the 2 Ubuntu machines has gone without a hitch.

It is a pity I am away all weekend and won't get a chance to play with them.

This is the firsat time we have done a Server kernel update and I am very relieved that the mail servers and websites survived the update

Anyone else done the upgrade yet ?

I've still been meaning to install Ubuntu on my PC, but being a real Linux novice, I can't get it to work with my RAID0 setup. Perhaps I need Danni's assistance.

I really would like to give it a go and see how it runs on a decent system.

I have not had a chance yet on my Ubuntu machine, but will probably
do it next weekend when my wife wife has her book group
around and I am sent to the study with a bottle of red wine!

I will keep a close eye on the forums before that to see what
experiences other people are having, I waited a couple of months
before upgrading to 7.10 Gusty Gibbon, which went without a hitch
(apart from the 3 and half hours it took to download at 60 to 80kbs due
to the 'wonderful' Pipex connection I had at the time!)

I will post on here to say how it goes.

I just download this new release in about half an hour. Ah, the joys of broadband. I may give it another whirl now.

Having got a suitable PC, complete with a dodgy eBay HDD (well I think Paul thinks it is) and having given fixing my CMOS battery discharge issue my best shot, I had better get Ubuntu 8.04 downloaded, burnt to a CD and installed.

No more excuses what say you?

having downloaded and installed last night - I'm pleased to hear that I have sound "out of the box" with my X-fi card.

What I'm less pleased about is I still have the white screen of death with ATI accelerated drivers - so now I have to refresh my memory of how to fix it

or butchering my old mobo?

I reckon after my grand-daughter´s 1st birthday party this afternoon that this evening I may have to have it all apart again to tack a couple of ¨starter motor¨ cables underneath for the addition of the ¨car battery¨ that I am going to have to find room for in the bottom of the case, to support the CMOS when the mains power is off!

It´s on my keyboard Rik - nothing to do with the forum. When I was installing Linux the keyboard option were strange UK English International with missing keys believe it or not looked the most promising of the options to me even though my keyboard has all it´s key!

When the Linux enthusiasts reappear I expect they will put me right!

That´s if they are still speaking to me!

It's odd, Les, because you're using an acute accent (180 in Windows) rather than an apostrophe. Definitely sounds like the wrong keyboard is selected - I wonder if you're using a dead key, the second stroke determines which accent is used?

You can reconfigure your keyboard through the Xorg configuration utility. I'm afraid it's off to a commandline, but:-

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I suggest you try the PC105 with a gb keymap

You could well be right. I noticed this when the forum spell checker put it right but I left some for others to see.

It was late when I did my install last night and the choices were less than obvious but I was tired.

No doubt it can sorted when I get home but I can't resist a wind-up!

I see D-Dan has given my a lovely UNIX like super user su command to fix it with. Thanks D-Dan.

It also seems there's a control panel but I have not found it yet but it's early days!

I would never have put myself in that category only a week ago but I am always up for a challenge.

The Java bin file is still sat on my Desktop. I had a look at Synaptic Package Manager but I was unable to fathom out how to mark my bin file for installation. Probably going to end up having to use swinstall with an autoreboot=true etc.

Ubuntu installs teh gnome desktop as the default - with the less than appeasing colours.

You can install kde from the package manager (just search kde). You can use the tried and tested kde - or the newer - and still buggy - kde 4 - depending how adventurous you feel.

I have to admit that kde 4 looks very nice, but like I said - it's still buggy. The choice is yours.

Edit - personally - I'm sticking with Gnome - having customised it a little to change the colour scheme and the windows gadgets etc. When kde4 matures a little, I'll probably switch.
