Router Newbie, pse have patience

I have just bought a D-Link G604T and wired via ethernet to my puter. Wireless is turned off. Sync on Home Max is 8128, speeds generally good around 4.5 to 5.5 mbps. Pings seem higher than my old Speedtouch 330 modem, but not a great problem.

I have noticed that the outgoing MTU is 1400 with no way of tweaking it. Is this picked up via IDNet in some way or just the router setting?.

I believe that on the 604T you can change MTU via "WAN Settings".

I`m sure I`ve sorted this out for someone else before, deja vous kicking in

Hi Wingco, I have the same router, you can change mtu log into router click settings then connection one, or where you set up your user & password.

As a matter of interest dslreports didn`t like me using MTU of 1500, something about uploads lower than MTU. Could be a Win98SE thing. Anyhow ran the MTU checker in TCPOptimizer and it suggested what I was using 1430. Reset and dsl reports is happy again.  8)

Thing is, you have a router MTU setting and a windows MTU setting. Problems occur when the router MTU is lower than windows MTU, that`s why I suggested 1500. BTw nowadays advise not to set MTU higher than 1458

Check your router setting, I bet it is still at 1500 as TCP Optimiser changes windows MTU

Oh no it isn`t  after running TCP Optimizer I changed it back 

I ran another test with router MTU 1500 PC MTU 1430. dslreports says, "Upload packet less than your MTU (FAQ #1492)"

M8, you have entered your Speed (advertised) kbit/s: 8128, is this what you are synched at? Check out my settings using Dr TCP as you have a slight problem

Basically Jeff I suspect the rwin might have been too high for my w98SE box, There were a few retrans errors and transfer efficiency was 99%. Left it for an hour and every test showed the same result.

I lowered the rwin and things returned to normal, no retrans & 100% efficiency.

Mark would you do me a favour?. Have a look in the router interface STATUS/DSL STATUS and tell me what you have against PATHMODE please.

Coopes, perhaps they have ascertained that your line should be interleaved. Helps stabalise your line but if u game I`ve heard this may be a problem.

Remember, I didn`t think you`d get Max with your old 1Mbit stats, at least not much better than what you already had

That`s what I have and it`s bugging me. I had a steady 2meg connection before upgrade to Max. I had a problem with my speedtouch just after regrading which caused a loss of sync on a couple of occassions. I replaced the speedtouch with the D-Link and come accross this.

I`ll wait until after Easter and email Simon.

It appears I have interleaving switched on   a couple of other 604 users have Pathmode = Fast Path. This is obviously down to the BT software, however it doesn`t allow much room for diagnosing faulty gear.

Four/five resyncs in a very short space of time has triggered the interleaving switch 

Have emailed support but don`t expect a reply till Tuesday after all they are entitled to their hols.

I have had interleaved on from the beginning. My speeds have got worse
over the week. My 10 days are up today, my speeds have not moved all day
2432 no matter what I do, my best had been up to 3663 and it was running great at that

Wingco, your stats are near perfect! "DS Margin" is your SNR ... we reckon that line resyncs lower when u maintain an SNR in between 3 and 6dB. Seeig as yours is 9dB with a full 8Mbit sync, u can safely say that your line is good

Coopes, remember m8, not everyone can connect at the full 8Mbit. Remember post Max when some were stuck on even a 256kbps because of factors such as distance from exchange, quality of line etc. Same thing for you I`m afraid, but what you should be looking at is your throughput, this is important from your perspective. Try a couple of speedtests to see how your line performs but again, remember that your line resyncs to reflect current line status

As far as the interleaving goes, I`m at a loss here. I need help from Simon on this ... he`s away for the weekend but i`ll ask him to input on it
