Interleave explained...

That explains things very well, however it doesn`t explain what triggers it  :(  I had a very stable 2meg connection with good speeds using a speedtouch 330. On being regraded to MaxDsl I decided to download the new "highspeed" drivers for the speedtouch whilst I decided what router to get.

I would assume the Speedtouch "upgrade" may have failed because it kept dropping the connection, although it had been OK for a couple of days after the Max regrade.

After about 5 resyncs I turned the puter off removed the speedtouch and replaced it with a router. It was then that I noticed Pathmode = Interleaved!

I can only assume that the BT software had kicked in >:(. if this is the case it doesn`t allow much of a chance to troubleshoot line probs >:( . Quite obviously once interleaving is on the software doesn`t recheck if it`s still needed.

I don`t know if Interleaving is affecting my speed or not. I`ve consistently synched at 8128/448, what I do know is that it`s put around 10ms on pings :(.

I`ve emailed support and asked them to check my line, however I don`t expect a reply until Tuesday at the earliest.

I must admit I hadn't thought much about interleave if your line stats improve... I suspect that once it kicks in that it stays in until BT remove it (which I think they will do at the request of the ISP).

Do let us know if yours does drop out without intervention, it would be a useful piece of information to add to what BT aren't telling anybody  :(

Looks like my Max dsl has settled down now to around 3.4 meg peak speed....does get lower than that depending on the time of day though! ;D

tried the ring wire trick today speeds gone up from 2345 to 3168 big difference.

I might try that then....which wires do i disconnect?

Coopes

The one I disconnected was the one with the most orange on it I think it was in block 2

Wrong - the ringing wire is connected to terminal 3; it's mainly orange with widely spaced, narrow white bands.

See here.

Whatever you do, do NOT cut the solid orange wire into terminal 2 - that's one of the two BT master line in wires!!  The other BT master in is solid white into terminal 5.

I did say I think, and it is mostly orange. I didn't cut mine anyway, I disconnected it.

Oh well...i only have 2 wires going to the BT A and B connectors...one blue and one white or pinkish colour.

There are lots of wires in there but only the above two are connected!

Mine had a solid orange coloured wire in terminal 3, this is the ringing wire which I removed. Terminal 4 has an orange and white wire which is not used but connected for neatness accoring to your link, which I also removed.

Has it affected your sync rate Mark ?

np m8, didn't read it that way at all - I was more worried about the fact you mentioned terminal 2, which if Mark had disconnected that it could have caused his connection to be lost altogether.

As for variation in colours and lack of standardisation, posted later, then it does mention the likelihood of this in the link I posted - would take all the fun out of it if it were all bog standard and easy!!!

Nothing much to say here but just wanted to make a point ;)

Bill, I`m au fair with interleaving but what I meant to say was that I was on the understanding that by default, interleaving thru IDNet was turned off by default, and if users here are showing an interleaved line then I need Simons input as to why this is ;)

I reckon it`s switched on for those with poorer line stats to try and obtain a better sync rate, perhaps part of the Rambo training? :)

That's pretty much, as I understand it. Most likely reason to turn it on seems to be if the exchange has several retrains in rapid succesion, the same number over a longer period don't have the same effect. But as with all BT actions on MaxDSL, the actual reason may be entirely different!
