Several people on the American forum to which I belong have installed SP3 with no apparent problems, however this link re IE7 was posted which may be of interest. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20436748-XP-SP3-and-IE6-IE7-IE8-Beta-Important-Information

I've installed it on 3 PCs with no problem at all. I slipstreamed it into the XP installation on my PC. :thumb:

Don't know how I missed this thread otherwise I might have waited a while longer  but out of character (I usually wait a while before installing big updates) I've down loaded XP SP3 a couple of hours ago from the MS website, it took about 30 minutes to complete, no problems. Have tested quite a few applications I use regular and so far everything seems to be running ok but will see how things go next few days.  :fingers:

Take care of all your memories. For you cannot relive them.

So if we don't hear from you for a while, Brian... :)

To be honest, there shouldn't really be any problems with SP3, given that it's mainly just a collection of hotfixes (with the exception of Microsoft's RMS - no idea what the problem is there!).

Rik

Using RMS is enough of a problem in itself, surely? ;)

Installed this afternoon. Nothing unusual to report so far other than Commodo keeps asking for permissions which is pretty normal I guess.
Will post further if anything detrimental comes to the fore.

Well - before anyone else plays maverick - just a reminder that SP3 RC2 forced me to re-install my system.

I've taken teh patient route with my main system now, and will wait until SP3 hotfix 5 is out :)

But, not to be completely in the dark - since PC2 is a clean install anyway - I've installed SP3 there.

Have I lost my way?

Oh joy, oh rapture.
Updated missus' laptop and found that the update totally removed outlook express together with all files/folders. Doing a sys restore now with fingers crossed. If it doesn't restore then I'm emigrating .... like rapidly.
More later if I'm still in the country which is dependent on 'er indoors trying to find the email folder.
Bl**dy microsoft with its half baked updates!!! :rant2: :rant2: :rant2:

Breathing again.
Sys restore worked!!!!!!!
Now switched off updates on the laptop and will put up with the nagging from MS tho. I do half remember being able to stop the nagging but I can't be ar*ed at present to work it out.
All a bit strange really 'cos the update on my main 'puter worked a charm with no probs, YET..  :eek4:
2nd thoughts, I could have removed SP3 thro. Add/remove progs but doubt whether this would have resurrected outlook express.

Just installed sp3 on the only PC in the house left running XP restarted as instructed, no longer able to load windows, just continues to reboot, back to SP2 hopefully with acronis. Never had this issue with vista SP1.Tempting to kick XP into touch altogether but its a bit like saying goodbye to an old friend :)

That's worrying, Steve. Hope Acronis does its magic for you.

I am sure acronis will do its job, I have never had an issue with a service pack before and I know other people have had no issues with this release. I have four choices, stay with SP2, try again, slipstream a clean install or double the ram and say goodbye. I suppose the third is the most sensible as its nice to have one OS in the house thats tried and trusted. :)

I'd go with (3) myself, as I do like the machines to be talking the same language, so to speak. :)

I agree; I rarely install a service pack by a method other than slipstreaming.

...dare I mention Vista SP1?

Flushed with the success of installing XP SP3 on my PC (ie redoing all the updates with a new badge on), I updated My Good Lady(tm)'s laptop with vista SP1...

...and all seemed well...

until the ohone call at work saying her sounds were all going through the USB phone she uses for Skype (so the poor love couldn't listen to Sarah Kennedy bless)....

Easy enough fix, but who'd have thought it was so difficult to remember the default state between service packs?  :eyebrow: Ho hum

Tried again to reinstall XP SP3 via windows update, failed again, xp fails to load following install. A quick google shows other people are having similar problems. Thank goodness for Acronis it has worked flawlessly. I will try a slipstream eventually but that of course means a full additional  software program install, unless I am missing something and you can reinstall over SP2 :)

Why does this always happen, I wonder. The beta has been long enough, so what did MS miss?

Weird, isn't it, how some can have an AMD-based computer (like myself) and have no issues with SP3, then others have no end of grief?
