It's always the way, Sebby, some people sail through it and others suffer massive problems. One of those hardware/driver issues I suspect.

Yeah, it could be a whole host of things I'd imagine. :(

Interesting! Thanks. The machine I am having a problem with is custom built, A8N32Sli board x2 4400. I think from reading http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/archive/2008/05/08/does-your-amd-based-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx

I probably ought to wait for a fix? or possibly try a slip stream when I have time :)

Further reading suggests that there is no guarantee of success with a slipstream of sp3 for owners of a PC incorporating an Asus A8N32SLI. Surely this is a major blunder by MS,there should be a warning on the update regarding incompatibilities, it would save a lot of wasted time and effort :)

MS are pretty good at major blunders in my experience. :( I understand the issues they face with beta testing, but with something as fundamental as an OS, they really should be trying harder.

I have done a slipstream insatllation with sp3 and then installed IE7 and IE7 kept freezing.  I did an update to sp3 with an xpsp2 installation with IE7 and that kept freezing as well.  I discovered that by turning off enable quick tabs uinder the tabs configuration all problems were solved.  Thought I has to share this in case anyone has a similar problem.

I've seen reports of the SP3 update causing some computers to keep rebooting. Seems that it's only with certain AMD processors. Anyone here had that problem?

The problem seems to stem from some manufacturers (such as HP) that provide a restore CD. The issue is that the restore CD includes both Intel and AMD drivers to save them having to have different restore CDs for different computers. The fix looks quite simple.

I built a PC with an AMD Athlon X2 5000+ and installed Windows XP Professional with SP3 slipstreamed last week without a problem. :)

Cool  :thumb:

Glad I hadn't read that before I updated my PC to SP1 (Vista), or I might well have thought twelvety times, instead of just the twice  ;)

Personally, I think a lot of these problems are hyped up, when in reality they only affect a handful of users. :)

I've installed SP3 on an Intel Core 2 quad system and an AMD dual core system as well, with no problem at all.  :)

Of course, if you're one of the handful... ;)

It must be annoying, but then a problem like this is understandable, when it's actually down to cost-cutting PC manufacturers. That said, MS are far from perfect as the RMS fiasco has shown - this was entirely their fault.

To be fair though sebby, there must be so many machines out there with that little odd quirk about them, that MS can never get it 100% right with every one. It's like anything else - you can test something until you are blue in the face, but you never know exactly what is gonna happen until it gets on a real world system.

It's the big problem with Windows boxes. Each one is pretty much unique, different mobos, CPUs, chipsets, graphics cards etc etc etc.

Exactly - and I don't think that they can be expected to test every update with every one of the possible combinations.

Rik

Especially when you factor in things like printer drivers, which interact with video drivers etc.

When you think about it, they probably do well to get the updates succesfully onto the number of machines that they do  ;)

Rik

When I worked for Adobe, and Type 1 fonts were rasterised by ATM, we had no end of problems with printer drivers clashing with the video driver/ATM combo. That was a tiny function compared to the complete machine.

Rasterised - there's a word you don't hear every day. had to look it up, and I'm still not sure that I fully understand  ???

Rik

Think of it as being like a TV picture, where the images are made up from scan lines. You take the mathematical description of the shape (curves) and convert it into a bitmap at a specific size. All monitors, TVs, printers etc rasterise the image.

Isn't it funny how you always see warnings like this thread after the event!

I had just finished downloading SP3 into XP Home on an AMD desktop, when I read this. :o

So far all seems OK .............................  :fingers:
