Interesting article for those who find this aspect of Vista very annoying here

Rik

That's another fine link you've got us into, Mad. ;)  :thumb:

I must admit I don't find the uac annoying Mad, its been reduced in SP1 anyway and apart from installing software or running a few programmes I never really see it :)
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

madasahatter

That's true Gary - it's just that when you are installing a few things together - for instance when you set a PC up, it does get a little wearing shall we say  ;)

Rik

I think where I would hit problems would be if Sue was using the machine, she'd always want to check with me first, so we'd both end up getting nothing done.

I spent 18 hours putting all my software on this pc Mad so I know, but I think bypassing it defeats the point of it, works arounds maybe but I never trust short cuts ;D each to there own on this one, but after while another click is just that, another click ;D

Its really not that bad Rik, basically it asks you if you started the action, you know you did so you say yes, game over. :) I think my medication helps with this maybe......

Rik

Sue would never want to say yes, though, without double-checking with me, Gary.

I can certainly see the point of it, just gets me a little frustrated sometimes - suppose it's all down to individual perception - I know it's me that wants to do it, and I suppose I'm expecting the PC to know that too  ;D

Aprt from UAC, I have no problems whatsoever with Vista - I like it  :thumb:

I like Vista too and I don't mind the security checks, it's all in a good cause. I wouldn't go back to XP now.

Rik

Have you started using the fingerprint reader, Noreen?

No, Rik. I couldn't get it to work with my fingers, finger tips very smooth at my age. ;D Not bothered about it as nobody else uses the computer.

Rik

I'm always wary of such devices anyway - unless they have a back door, they can lock you out from the machine. So, you're well placed to commit the perfect crime then, eh? ;)

I agree the Miami one is so false even the tinted skies get to me, and the characters are just.... but the original is the best, and I like the NY one, the first season was very dark of that but its changed and really works well now

Tbh Gary, I think a lot of the peeps who are so anti Vista either just haven't given it a proper try, or are just  listening to what they read/other peeps say and following the herd  :)

I don't like Miami either - Horatio just comes across as smug and objectionable. I still think the original is the best - Grissom is a right know it all, but you know that's because he does know it all, and he's spent years amassing that knowledge  :thumb:

I agree. He feels more like a real scientist than the rest. Miami wasn't too bad to start with, but seemed to get more stylised and Hoatiod very quickly. NY is OK, but I still wonder why a team of CSIs regularly lead an assault on a building when they have a SWAT team there. Not quite believable. :)

Afraid I was one of those listening to other people and decided that I didn't want Vista at any price. What an idiot I was! Of course there are people whose computers aren't powerful enough for Vista or maybe have other technical reasons for not wanting it.

And the women in high heels as well Rik in those assaults? I think the guy who plays Grissom said he was upset at so many spin offs, CSI is the original and the best.

My reluctance has been fuelled by a lack of drivers. I know I'd have to replace at least one printer and a scanner, so I decided to wait - even though I have a copy of Ultimate sitting on the desk. IAC, I tend not to move to a new OS until SP1 is released, born of long experience with MS.

Can't argue with that, Gary. The other thing that always amuses me is how well their cellphones work in the most unlikely places. :)

I was surprised that my olde IP5000 cannon was fully supported under Vista Rik, but I agree SP1 generally shows a OS level of maturity

I think in one episode that really bugged me, they were using them underground in the basement of a factory where you would never get reception, and the total lack of need for of tablet pc's with perfect streaming webcam reception across the whole city that they all carry now, and the incredible amount of monitors needed in every room, Miami takes the biscuit for burning the worlds energy sources with at least 4 monitors per person

I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to install any drivers for my old Epson printer or my old external Maxtor drive, my Logitech wireless mouse also worked without me installing a driver although I did eventually as I wanted all the bells and whistles. The only thing that doesn't work is my old Canon scanner, I've confirmed that on the Canon site where they say that it won't work with Vista due to "technical difficulties".

I really need a  scanner, Im not a fan of all in ones at all

XP was a bit like that for HP printers, Noreen. MS had agreed a deal with HP that MS would provide all the legacy drivers with the OS. Dymo, otoh, had printers that physically wouldn't work with Vista (don't ask me why). Scanners always seem to be an issue, despite the TWAIN interface, manufacturers seem to 'get down and dirty' in the way they manipulate the data at interface level.

Me too, Gary. I'm not a fan of "all in one" things at all, something goes wrong with one item and you've lost the lot. I'll probably get another Canon scanner when I can exert myself. ;D

Rik

I have the all-in-one as a copier/fax, and it is brilliant - we'd definitely replace it if it failed. For documents, the scan quality is ideal, HP are very good at document scanning and the resultant OCR has very high accuracy. OTOH, I don't use it for photographs, they are done on a dedicated photo scanner from Microtek. Their interface is amongst the best I know for photographic work, and it allows me to do most of the correction work in the scan (and I scan in 16-bit mode, then do the basic corrective work in PShop at that level, before reducing to 8-bit mode for final tweaking).

I personally cannot stand HP Rik, i never got over their buggy drivers a few years back, i like cannon printers and would probably go for a cannon scanner, since its not being used all the time it can be slid away making the whole thing less bulky for our needs here.

I've been using HP for a couple of decades, Gary. I've got nothing but good things to say about them - they even replaced an ageing Laserjet for me with the latest model FOC, because they were unable to supply the correct driver for the old one. When I did the Dunblane book of remembrance, they lent me a colour laser (about £10K) at the time, and sent an engineer along to make sure it was perfect.

Rik

That should do you nicely. My only concern is that it doesn't mention what the sensor is, eg CCD or CMOS. The former tend to produce better results in my experience.

I think it was for me on their inkjets as well Rik that their software also was very spy worthy passing back user information, also the use of auto shut down of ink cartridges after a period of time so it looked like you had run out, mind you we are probably talking different class of products between what you used and what i tried, I stick to what works and my IP5000 is a great printer. But i accept your knowledge of printers exceeds mine  :)

CCD is generally better, cmos units tend to use imaging software to enhance images and that does not always work well, see most mobile phone cameras for details  ;)

Epsons are the worst, imo. They dry up and waste huge amount of ink in cleaning, and they trigger the 'full sponge' way too early in their life-cycle. I like Canon these days, but in the 90s their drivers were so buggy they caused me a lot of grief in my Adobe days. I have had problems with my HPs over the years, but the company has always put things right (and I never do a full software install, just the basics). Dymo label printers are good, but their software isn't the best. Sagem gye-subs are as good as any other.
