BT badged 2-wire 2700 Version 2 installed : download speed decreased !

Hi All,

I'm new to IDNet as of Tuesday & a complete newbie re ADSL. I connected initially on Tuesday using a Speedtouch 510 Router without problems and over the last two days have seen download speeds of anything from 5600 to 3770 today.

Having seen the discussion on the 2-Wire Roputer and having one at my disposal, I decided to see if I could improve on the speed. I have set it up as per the instructions in the Forum posts including a factory reset, but no poisoning  as its Version 2.

On startup it gave an error indicating "Configuration Server Post: Waiting for DNS information", but everything seems to work ok.

My problem - my current download speed has now dropped to  1246.74 kbps

Wireless & USB are set to disabled, Ethernet connection - enabled.

Help from anyone appreciated.

Hi Mac, welcome to the forum.

It looks like you may have a stuck profile, common in the first few days of a connection. Can you try the BT speed tests at http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/. Please cut and paste back the entire result, that will tell us what we need to know.

Be aware that the BT tester requires patience, your phone number and IDNet login name (name@idnet.gw5 usually) and it seems to work better with IE rather than Firefox.

Your sync speed should get you a 5000k profile, so apart from the stuck option, it's possible that it's dropped when changing over the routers. How do you connect to the phoen line, eg master socket, hard wired extension, loose extension? What else is connected, eg phone, Sky box etc?

How do you connect to the phone line:

Master socket.
What else is connected: nothing.
I have two phone lines at present (just retired, so the business one is redundant, hence I have put IDNet onto it). House phones are totally independent. The 2700 2-Wire goes straight to the master socket using the cable out of the box. No other computers connected to the hub and wireless disabled.

As a separate issue, do I need to worry about the error indicating "Configuration Server Post: Waiting for DNS information" ?

I'll try the BT test shortly.

I've never seen that warning, Mac. How do you have your IP address and DNS set up in the router:

Both should be set to 'obtain automatically'.

However, in checking this I notice that the Summary shows ATM Encapsulation to be Bridged LLC. IDnet details indicate it should be VCMUX

The Router allows me to choose Bridged VC-MUX or Routed VC-MUX. Should I change this setting and if so to which of these two options ?

It should be routed VC-Mux, Mac, though I had no troubles running one in bridged mode when I let it auto-detect the connect. Also ATM PVC Search should be disabled.

Now I have changed these I get a message that my PPP Username is not correct!

I've read about this problem in earlier posts on the 2700 - I think I have to use a Java script rather than press "Save", so I'll check through the Forum.

Strange how it all works, but at low speeds - mind you I did say I was a newbie to all this techie stuff

Have you done a factory reset on the router, Mac? That's where I started from, then I knew it was 'clean'. Everything looks OK, though. We're on a different gateway, but I'm on the DSL4 realm, so that's to be expected. I don't get the waiting message though.

When I setup my BT-badged dual SSID 2700 for the first time, I used the correct key and saw the same problem as you with the "configuration server" - this is because it's trying to get some details from BT, which won't work with a non-BT username. I also went on to notice that some of the settings looked to be wrong (like yours), so I did a factory reset and set it up manually.

The correct settings are as follows.

DSL Line Selection: Line 1 (inner pair)
ATM Circuit Identifier: VPI: 0 VCI: 38
ATM Encapsulation:  Routed VC-Mux
ATM PVC Search: Disabled

I'm not saying it's made a difference to the performance, but I feel better knowing the settings are correct.

With regards to your speed, they look fine. Could you run a BT speed test and post the results to confirm whether this is a profile or speed issue?

I have disconnected the said 2700 Router, completed a factory reset and then, as suggested, I did a 'manual' install rather than using the Setup Wizard. This has allowed me to specify "Routed VC-MUX" instead of the Router automatically defining Bridged LLC, as it did previously.

As before, I received a warning about incorrect PPP ID and I still can't find a way of disabling the ATM PVC Search despite clicking the radio button and applying the javascript submit() phrase.

However, despite this the Router connected to IDNet successfully.

I then ran the BT Speedtest and got the following results:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    IP profile for your line is - 4000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  5024 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
    Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3723 kbps

Interestingly, the speed has now increased almost to my Speedtouch 510 results earlier in the day, but I note the DSL connection Rate has dropped from the previous rating of 6208kbps to 5024kbps

I guess then that the actual throughput has increased from 1240kbps to 3723kbps since I did the manual set up, but also that my old Speedtouch 510 seems on a par with the 2700 2-Wire Router. Glad I didn't pay the full BT retail price for the latter

I will monitor over the next 8 to 10 days to see what BT do with this new ADSL connection and hope it remains on the 4000 profile.

Well the profile is correct for the sync. See how things go now the router is definitely setup correctly, and don't hesitate to report back if there are any further problems.

It's worth mentioning, Mac, that if you reset the router around the time you made the post, you're probably not getting the best sync speed you can. I'd be tempted to reset the DSL during the day and see if there's more to be had from the line.

Ok, I'll reset during today as you suggest.

Thinkbroadband speedtests this morning indicate that it appears stable at around 3780kbps, similar to the BT test last night.

its 21.10 on a Saturday night and Im just in from a big meal at a social event ....(burp !) , I read what you said about the dual SSID BT 2700 HGV and I went through exactly the same things as you outline.

Currently , my Router shows Bridged LLC as the VC-MUX gives incorrect PPP password for me too. I was advised to leave it, so I did.

On a Saturday evening during peak hours , I got this :

Wait for your traning period to run its course, you are worrying yourself un-needlessly dude. The 2700HGV Dual SSID is THE best router Ive ever owned , bar none.

Hi James, thanks for your input on the subject. Being new to this ADSL techie stuff it's easy to get paranoid over whether I have the thing set up right. From the responses so far I have decided to stick with my current settings in the 2-Wire and leave well alone now until the end of my ten day 'settling' in period for the new connection. What I can say is that so far it seems to be consistent at 3760kbps download and 364kbps upload, although todays test showed 4137kbps download was acheived. IDnet suggested before I ordered that my connection profile would be 4000k, so I'm not unhappy with the speed I'm getting. Heres hoping by the end of the week it stays in that profile, or if I'm really lucky gets better. Regards Mac

It sounds like you might even make a 4500 profile, Mac. It's a good idea to leave things stable for now as the only thing set in stone by the 'training period' is your maximum stable rate and, derived from it, the fault threshold rate. The higher the latter figure the better, as that's the figure which determines when BT accept there is a fault on the line.
