Still terrible speeds

My speeds appeared to be ok about 3 days ago, then yesterday and today the speeds have returned to being unbelievably slow, as they were a few weeks ago.

   DSL Status :     Up
           DSL Modulation Mode :     GDMT
           DSL Path Mode :     INTERLEAVED
           Downstream Rate :     8064 Kbps
           Upstream Rate :     448 Kbps
           Downstream Margin :     8 db
           Upstream Margin :     26 db
           Downstream Line Attenuation :     30
           Upstream Line Attenuation :     15
           Downstream Transmit Power :     0
           Upstream Transmit Power :     0

This speed test gives 160 kbit/sec

Everything says good on idnet's network status page.

Unfortunately BT's speed test seems overloaded right now and is just giving the Test Error message after waiting a few minutes.

Is anyone else experiencing these low speeds of only about 3x the speed of an old 56k modem? I have spoken to IDnet support and they said my DSLAM is at only 20% load with no issues. Huh...

Rik

I've got no problems here, and haven't seen any others reports lately, sorry. :(

I've got a feeling it could be your profile that's to blame, which could be a sign of instability (even if you don't realise).

Keep persevering at the BT speed test, then we can see for certain. :)

I would argue that anything less than 2000 kbit shouldn't be marketed as broadband!

Back to my issue, BT's speedtest is still not working at midnight, geez will they ever fix this thing? My speeds are still 15K/s surely if it was a contention issue it would have picked up by this time of night?

Sebby

Not if it's a profile issue. What's the problem with the speedtester?

zebrum

To be honest I think my connection is so slow the speed test download is timing out and I am seeing a generic error message. After about 5 minutes it says either :

"Test Error"
"Unexpected result received when querying the network to find your services connection details. Please try again shortly, but if this problem persists raise the issue with your service provider."
(In IE)

"Test Error"
"Unexpected result received when querying the network to find your services connection details. Please try again shortly."
(In Safari)

Sebby

In that case I'd give IDNet a call as they can confirm your profile. There's nothing else obvious that I can think of. :(

Unfortunately, BT set the goal posts at 400k. :(

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6649 kbps

there`s fek all wrong with bt speedtester, did this at 09.35am today

There really is no consistency when it comes to the BT tester. :(

Rik

Yes there is - it's always unpredictable. ;D

as long as you have the latest java and use IE for testing, I never had issue with it really Sebby, but I always tested at quieter times of day

Sebby

I haven't really had many problems myself, but a lot of people do.

Its odd how that works out Sebby :-\ I wonder if people are using the latest java of maybe their security interferes with it

I think it is more likely that there is regional test servers (or at least at the major points such as Illford, Edinburgh etc) and that certain servers are overloaded.

That probably true Lance, I doubt BT put a lot of resources behind their speed tester

what gets my goat big time is adslmax on TB gloating over his bbxmax speedtests which he is running at about 4am in the day !! HELLO.........Obsessive Compulsive Disorder anybody !!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the bull he posts " hey I got 85,100 kps on an 8MB package, look at me. Yeah we are looking at you and thinking "what a clot ! "

Overall accuracy iro speedtests is an uncontestable issue, If I use TB, DSLZONE UK and the BT Speedtester, Im always somewhere between 6500k - 7000k and what that tells me is that all is just dandy, and I can live with that.

Anyone who believes a speedtester which tells him he's going faster than he's connecting probably needs to take a refresher course in physics. ;)

The one that many people have pegged here to their signatures, is always well out, tried it this morning and it said I was running at 15mb download  ::) and that was the maidenhead server, that test is wildly inaccurate

Rik

It's certainly not one I trust, Gary, it can't even manage accurate ping times.

This is my speedtest from TB a bit more accurate than that other one ;) god knows how it came up with 15mb

I'm not with Idnet, Zebrum, but that download result is very low, have you already posted your router stats?

yeh stats from yesterday in post #1. My stats today are identical, but today my download speed has halfed, perhaps something to do with a fix attempt:

James: "The IP profile at the moment is currently set at 7mb, i have had BT check the profile manually to make sure the information is completely accurate. However the noise margin is fluctuating quite violently for the last few days, i have had them raise the noise margin slightly to compensate this and stabilize the circuit."

Rik

So are you seeing a lot of errors in the router log?

I'm currently using a Linksys WAG354G which doesn't appear to show any sync details in the logs. I'll switch back to my old router and check its logs which do show that.

Meanwhile James wrote back with this: "I have requested BT turn on interleaving permanently to try and help further with the noise and loss of packets, this will take them 24 hours to complete, can you test this again this time tomorrow and see if the connection improves."

This is an odd thing to say though because I have never seen my router report anything other than Interleaved since I have had IDNet. I expect I have a serious problem that even the interleaving technique hasn't been able to alleviate. Here are a few pings to my default gateway:

64 bytes from 212.69.63.51: icmp_seq=24 ttl=254 time=277.457 ms
64 bytes from 212.69.63.51: icmp_seq=25 ttl=254 time=866.391 ms
64 bytes from 212.69.63.51: icmp_seq=26 ttl=254 time=192.324 ms

Rik

Interleaving is usually on auto, and is switched in and out as required. It can also use several depths, the more interleaving there is, the slower your ping times. It may be that the change from auto to on will also increase the depth.

This sounds very similar to what I've been going through (check my other threads) - which I finally isolated (after 2 months of checking) to noise. When I contacted IDNet and Miriam spoke to a BT engineer, the diagnosis of noise fluctuations was almost identical, resulting in frequent loss of syncs, and ever slower connections.

You may want to start investigating the noise, and the cause (though trust me - it's a hell of a detective job), then try to remove the problem.

At one point, I was down to a profile of 256k :(

Happily, I'm back to full sync and waiting for my profile to resume iver the next few days.
